Mercedes W02 front wing?

Post

I have been looking at the front wing of the MGP W02 in Sepang and have not found it to be the same as the one mentioned in Scarbsf1's Blog.

http://scarbsf1.wordpress.com/2011/03/1 ... -analysis/

Can any body shed some light on this? I have been trying to find out why this is and come up with nothing.

They decided against racing that wing at the last test I believe

The one you see mentioned on Scarbs was "the new for 2011" wing.

The problem is it upset the balance of the car during testing so they reverted back to the old one, with the addition of a couple of slots to mimick a three element front wing.

You could see it return, so long as Mercedes can get some rear end grip to match the grip from this new front wing.
More could have been done.

Balance Marcush.

The front wing was providing more than the rear could handle. Hence why the W02 is actually oversteering in the faster sections. The Highspeed S at Malaysia is a monument to this, Schumacher getting bundles of oversteer and exiting rally style.

They got the front wing on, and found that the added front end downforce made the rear even more nervy.
More could have been done.

But I thought, that was the wing that made Michael on top of the time sheets in final test?

He used the old wing with slots removed.

The more I think about this, the more I see that their issues are not insurmountable, but they certainly appear to be. I bet anything they were planning on their renewed sidepods and vertical fins to flow more air to the back with the exhaust making their new front wing a viable choice. Wrong. Replacing that front wing will then require more angle of attack on the rear wing or a rear wing redesign, or if they see it viable, a RB style exhaust. I can't see this being as big of an issue if the car weren't so incredibly wide..... Hoping they pull it out. The car is fundamentally good, they just need to work out these details in a big way if they want to run at the front.
