How about buying the old BMW KERS? As I remember they actually had the most developed KERS unit. It was just that their car was such a dog.

that´s a myth..Heidfeld has publicly hailed the Renault KERS as being in a different world to the BMW system wich never worked satisfactory and how they never managed to integrate it into the car to work suitable for the driver.Time goes on quickly in these technologies..and I guess RedBull will not catch up quick enough with this.

You are right, I don't remember at which point they decided to exlude KERS, but I think it was still early in the season, I think they reintroduced it for the last couple of races. KERS and the effect that KERS had on the design of the car, made it a "dog".

I seem to remember that after Canada 08 they shifted development on 09, and the main focus was KERS...

look better to what i said. I said 'Indeed and still it was crap' They developped a really long time in KERS and had high hopes for it, they ditched their 2008 car for this which likely lost Kubica's world championship to build a crappy not working KERS. sure it was new technolgy by then, and reliability problems arent that much of a deal, but the system didnt do much more then being add on weight, compare that to the other systems that actually added something.

RBR had a KERS 'programme' for the 2009 system which they eventually ditched and took the Renault system. Perhaps they were keen to use some of their IP?

I honestly dont think RBR has a KERS issue at all. They are just sandbagging themselves using KERS to make the 2011 championship look more interesting.

when there is that much money on the line at the end of the season can anyone afford to sandbag during a race???? i mean really if the smallest thing goes wrong with their car they are out of the race.. missing out on points.... i think the " drink company" wants to crush everyone. ultimately what Bernie, this drink company and other major sponsors are after is the TV viewership and TV revenue. Without them, F1 will not survive. The closer the championship, the better it is for everyone, including the fans.

Imagine if RBR or Vettel would to consistently qualify 1 to 2 secs ahead of the rest, I am pretty sure not many people will be keen to talk about or watch F1 this season.

LOL im sure they wish that was the case. They have a self inflicted battery problem. They decided to develop their own battery pack to suit their preferred installation next to the engine gearbox. This is overheating and the cells inside are failing ( or perhaps vice versa).

Does anyone know if teams are looking into ultracapacitors for storage? You would think that generating and holding 400kj of power would be right down the alley of ultracapacitors. Li-Ion by nature don't like high rate charging.

Maybe the footprint of UC is too big?

Energy density of ultracapicators still way to low (5-6Wh/kg).Best li-ion cells are currently at 180Wh/kg.
