Honda CBR 600 Engine Query

Post

Hello,

At my Uni we're starting up formula student for the first time and i'm in charge of finding an engine. By the looks of things the Honda CBR 600 is the way to go. Money is extremely tight and I was wondering if anyone knew what a good price for one of these would be - I don't want to be unknowingly ripped off!

We'd need everything required to get it running; Engine, carbs, electronics etc. If anyone has any words of advice it would be greatly appreciated.

Which model engine? Have you something in mind?

A new motor will cost you lots.. An older engine, say, late 90's will cost you between £100 and 400 - depending on state of tune.

What specs do you need? power? weight? size?

Hi,

I have an offer of this:

Honda CBR600 '98, 17000 miles, a good runner --- Engine alone £395
Carbs
Exhaust downpipe
Wiring loom
CDI box

He would do the deal for retail at £600 but said he'd do it for £540 - I havn't haggled (yet).

CMSMJ1- I'm not too bothered about max power, weight etc. As long as it goes! (Of course having a light, powerful, cheap engine would be ideal though)

That is not the best price IMO. You could probably source a complete bike for £800 and sell on the remains of it to recoup some cost.

What kind of chassis is this going in? If you are looking for engines then perhaps you might get a look at a VFR750 motor. A V4 might help your packaging and although it would be heavier it is more torquey and powerful than the IL4 600 engine.

The places, apart from the ebay etc, would be motorbike fora - pbmagforum, superbikeforum, motoforum (racers site)

I would imagine that the CBR 1998 motor you are looking at would have approx 90bhp

for similar money and weight...you could get a 900cc honda engine, from the early fireblade...120bhp

Stick up some info on what the motor is for, am sure we'll figure something out!

Thanks a lot for your help CMSMJ1, I'm away from my laptop just now but I'll post some pictures of what we have when I get home.#

P.S, the maximum displacement allowed is 600cc, so no fireblade engine.

It's going in a steel spaceframe chasis:

At the moment the Chassis is being built right now and we are trying to find an engine and differential.

If your going for a cbr600 that has carbs them i'm asuming the engine is pre 1999. I would recomend staying away from carbs if you can. Nothing but trouble. BUT if you have to, looking at your design, maybe a rvf/vfr400 with some nice stroked rods will take you to 510cc, a dyno jet and a good exhaust will take you to around 90bhp as that what i get at the wheel of my bike. Engine is minute could help you tighten the rear frame saving more weight. V4 nice and narrow, revs like crazy (15,000+ rpm) Plus on the RVF more than half the frame strength came from the engine so you could experiment with stressing the engine block. Seen them on ebay for £300 all in. Worth a look.

Richied, Yes, the engine is 1998. Can you explain what problems there are with the carbs?

Well for a start you either have to dry sum the engine or devise a way of stopping the oil sloshing around. This isnt (such a bad) problem on the RVF's V4 as its narrow and the oil doesnt shift over into the far right or left cylinders as much. The problem carbs cause is in the set up. Not only can you bugger the whole lot up with a simple messing around with a screw driver but you can also find that a setting in static is perfect for peek power yet when you get going, with the lateral motion, that the outer pistons lean/rich as you go round corners. I found that when i put my bike engine in a car the problem was under heavy breaking/aceleration the floats in the carbs would jam up. eventually flooding the engine. This was most probably cause by the agressive angle on placement in the chassis though to be honest. With injector engines this problem is practicaly gone as each piston is fed the right amount at the right time. One rule of thumb i go by is that you have to remember in a corner all the fluids go down on a bike and you have to compensate for this and that try to position the engine at the same angle of stroke as it would have done in the bike.

My friend has a 1998 cbr and the biggest gains are through good exhaust flow by the way. Also if its come from an old bike make sure the clutch is in good condition before you start fitting it. My friend gained 3hp alone in the drivetrain by fitting a new clutch, chain and sprokets as his was getting old
