Mercedes GP W02

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The car is absolutely the same externally, what happened to the upgrade package?

Edit:

That dip in the sidepods was there before.
So at least a new floor leading edge. Nothing drastic though. And the gills on top of the exhausts are closed. The ones on the sides of the survival cell are gone too.

Just noticed, the mirrors are new too, with the little turbulence reducing foils on the edges. Every little helps...

Looks like minor updates (aero bits) and some cooling internal updates. Hope the new suspension changes help the rear tires last longer. I never noticed the small snorkel before...

Look at the way the bargeboards fit in with the floor leading edge. I think they are trying to emulate the FEE effect by using the bargeboards to direct flow under the floor and to the sides, which would have the same result as exhaust flow blowing there with the same angle. Pushing the air out to the sides, in order to make more air come from the front of the car under the floor.

According to AutoMotorUndSport magazine, the changes to the cooling layout in the sidepods are so big that they had to crashtest the sidepods again.
Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.

The little strakes above the barge boards I find interesting... Clearly directing air down, and actually generating lift... but I guess they're also pushing more air into the channels around the side of side pods, and driving the rear end better.

Look at them from the front:

Looks more like vortex generators to me.

has anyone else clocked the huge airflow management thing stuck on the back of Rosberg's helmet (see imightbewrong's image above)

Indeed! But look at the size of the sidepod entries compared to Ferrari:
