Virgin MVR-02 Cosworth

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I agree with marcush, the retarded ignition must have some impact on the engine, as the gas is reacting against the pistons in order to exit the chamber. I guess you have a choice whether you use that force to accelerate or decelerate the engine. Potentially, you could use it to enhance engine braking.

so th bang goes directly on the piston ..this is called a rod bender or something..not healthy for the engine I tell you...

I don´t say it´s necessaryly a lot of power but with these engines even 10% would be almost 100horses....and you don´t want 100hp pushing your 600kg car forward when you come off the brakes.and it´s too early for throttle application...

Not all of the pistons would be necararily ignited at the same time, it could be possible to alter the timing so as to create retard some chambers but leave others in an advanced spark

no matter what you do as long as you have something ignited in the chamber it will release some energy and not only heat so the engine will push.I´m pretty sure you cannot be too late either as the hot exhaust will start a uncontrolled burning of the fuel otherwise and that will ruin not only the exhaust pipes but also be not amusing to your ears. The funny burbling sounds could they be a hint at them just reaching the point where a lot of the fuel is actually burnt in the pipes?

I wouldn't be surprised if they're only igniting certain cylinders and leaving others to pump fuel through to burn in the manifolds to be honest.
Probably why RB supposedly can only run the map for a single qualifying lap, the heat buildup in the sidepods would be unsustainable.

The push will be a little more than usual but probably not enough to make an undo difference to the cars handling - it could be balanced out with some clever KER's regeneration maps anyway.

I think the burbling is from not only the gas burning very late but some excess air behind that wave front passing out.
Secondly the exhaust was tuned for a certain range of rpm and timing, the pipes may sound like that because the retarded ignition combustion is way out of phase with what the pipes were tuned for. This is what is am guessing still.
For Sure!!

still you cannot hope to burn the fuel just in the exhaust..you need to ignite it with the sparkplug early enough- before- starting spontaneous copmbustion in the exhaust system or at the hot exhaust valve...well at least it would be perfect to clean the exhaust finside from carbon deposits...

No, but you can push fuel through the right cylinder to meet the burning charge from another cylinder as the manifold merge. You only need to set one alight with a spark plug...

I could've sworn this was the MVR-02 thread? :?

Has there been any news on impending updates from Virgin?

As with each year, teams bring unique Monaco updates, I'm fascinated to see what Virgin come up with compared to the rest of the field.

With drag efficiency being at the back of everyone's minds, this could be an opportunity for them to pull a surprise.

For anyone following them more closely this season, how have they been in the slower corners?

I don´t think this is what you want ...sure if the charge is burning already no trouble ther eapart from the massive heat energy released into the exhaust...so back to the Virgin..Cosworth has surely looked into the overrun mapping but it seems nobody was prepared to pay for a development of it.

As Glock already said they start at square one every weekend and have yet to build a base from which to develop. So I think that is one of their big issues ..they simply don´t have the tracktime to sort the car for the track AND evaluate new bits. You start the weekend with the updates and lose Fp1 and 2 with new bits only to find out that your base was completely wrong. The pressure shows really ..and sometimes you have to slow down to become quicker..even Mercedes had to learn this lesson last year.

 I think it's the Virgin thread.

But more to the point, i don't think they will be bringing any big updates to Monaco. From what i've heard Canada would be the next time they do that.

Sure they will probably be closer, as it's a short lap and the downforce doesn't play such a big part. I don't think the car is very spectacular in slow corners either. It just doesn't seem to have any strong points. Just all around slow. Glock has said that it isn't a bad car to drive, it just lacks downforce. But i still think they have too big of a margin to the teams in front to actually suprise anyone.

Well to be fair, glock did a great job in qualifying getting as close as he did to lotus and also sauber.

From the team comments it sounds like there understanding how to extract the best setup for the car.

out of interest does anybody know which updates they were running and on which car?

wrong race to finally understand the car methinks

If your deficiencies don´t show in monaco as they do on other tracks i´d say quick corners(total downforce in quick corners and aero efficiency is their main problem as a first guess? Nothing new in that .

I understand your point, though it's not out of the realms of possibility that they might be understanding the new upgrade package especialy as they have had a testing session and grand prix (spain) to hone the setup procedure.

This was clearly the best weekend they've had so far this year. Glock was actually able to fight with other cars, which must be a morale boost for him. It also shows that the car has some mechanical grip, which might come handy at Montreal aswell. Let's hope they can get the aero sorted out and start consistently to give the Lotuses some hard time.
