Re: Exhaust blown diffusers, possible restriction

ECU's cannot be changed or tampered with as mandated by the FIA. (Unless faulty)

The software mappings on the ECU are all uploaded to FIA servers and can also be monitered in race if the need arises.
More could have been done.

James Allen has collared a Benz engineer to clarify some points :)

Ferrari behind the EBD mid season ban?

Post

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/92870

In a round about way, Newey is pointing at Ferrari. I would not be surprised given the sport's past history. Thoughts?

It's an interesting point of view from someone in the sport rather than a fanboy/hater.

Of course, it could have been posted in the existing EBD ban thread...

neweys statements are really on the wrong side of paranoia...it´s not in the spirit of the rules to use exhaust gas for producing downforce .period.
end of story ,no need to distract yourself from your aim bickering around who might or might not have pushed for the change and had the weight to get it pushed through.
Obviously its done and dusted so why bother?

Probably because it's one thing to ban it after the season is over, it's another to ban it mid season, perhaps with a huge shake-up at the top.

If using exhaust gasses to create downforce wasn't in the spirit of the rules, it would have been axed over a year ago when Red Bull brought it back.

And my bad for not posting this in the EBD thread. Maybe someone can move it?

Except the "spirit of the rules" is irrelevant. The actual words of the rules don't prevent it - the FIA has banned it by issuing a dubious "clarification" having accepted it for quite a long time.

If I were Red Bull I'd be quite annoyed about it having designed my car around the system in the full knowledge that it was legal. I have no doubt that RBR will have talked to Charlie about it when designing the car and Charlie will have said "OK" or they wouldn't have used it. It is an integral part of the car's basic design so the risk of turning up at the first race without the FIA having cleared it would be too great.

It's the issuing of "clarifications" about things following team lobbying that makes F1 (and the FIA in particular) look somewhat childish/stupid IMHO. It also fuels the conspiracy theories of the FIA / Bernie trying to engineering the championship to ensure a full season of "who will win?" rather than a number of "dead" races at the tail end of the season.

I think the whole contention between "cold" and "hot" blowing is just the method...Cold blowing is free, the engine is in the "off" state and the air pumping effect would've existed regardless, they change the timing and mapping to make it more pronounced. But hot blowing you are putting fuel into it, adding energy to the flow and gaining aero benefit. I can see the argument made with it being an "moving" aero device since you are able to actually vary the downforce with the amount of blowing.

If they can throw the book on Renault's TMD as an moveable aero device, this is much easier as its much more direct....and they did that mid-season as well...

I didn't agree with the TMD ban at all. The TMD was more secretive than the EBD though. Only one team had such device, just so happened it was the team winning at the time.

The cold blowing will be a lot less effective because the throttle will be closed. The FIA is clamping down on throttle possition relative to foot/pedal position. Sure the engine is still moving, but there will be a lot less flow from the pumping.

The Brabham BT46 "fan car" is probably the nearest equivalent, ie a mechanical device blowing air to reduce pressure below the floor.

I think it probably does need to be removed from F1, burning petrol to blow air is a bit silly, petrol is for providing drive to the wheels. However, it is odd to ban it mid season 12 months after we all knew about it. A correct decision, just 6 months late (or 6 months early)

I have to agree with that. The timing is just off... and purposefully so I am thinking.

As an engineer ..of course you are annoyed by rules ruling out the inventions you just made..
But in the end it is an honour to all those who invented things in F1 which got later on banned...
like Murray with the fan car,Lotus with the wingcar/skirts/double chassis, active suspension...

I don't believe that Ferrari are behind it. I agree with those who are saying it's a ploy to try and even out the field and make the remaining races more exciting. I think it's going to backfire on them and not hinder Red Bull much at all. Why won't they just let Red Bull win?
They've done all the hard work, they've designed a brilliant car, they deserve it.
If the other teams want a shot at winning they should up their game.As it stands they're getting a really embarrassing thumping from the team that's 'just a soft drink company'.
If it was going to get banned it should have happened at the beginning or end of the year - this is just complete unfairness, not just on Red Bull but all of the teams.
This is what I've come to expect from the morons in the FIA, who are messing up F1 for the fans.
Practically no fan wants the smaller engines and now banning things on the winning team halfway through the season and the 'push and overtake' button just smack of race manipulation to me and makes me not want to watch the races in protest. In all my years of watching F1 I've never seen it in such a sorry state before.
