Mercedes GP W02

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Looks like Mercedes moved up on pure pace, but how is the race pace looking relative to the others? The Mclaren's race pace looks to be just shy of Ferrari's, yet their quali pace is under Mercedes it seems.

Truly original, never seen that since my late mother's Volvo 121 "Amazon" muffler, but it would be intriguing to learn how they came to that certain cross-section and where to stop longitudionally-wise?
One can only guess, but it's not particularly aerodynamic, is it?

Occurred to me as well... surely they will find a more elegant solution... I read somewhere that Ferrari initially also ran with it exposed like that, but I don't know how truthful that is.

Mclaren still does right? Might be due to the hot blowing?

The air velocity at that part of the car is almost zero.. so the covering is sort of inconsequential in the larger view of things.

Then why the effort to form the narrowest side pod possible in this area?

Finally the MkIII wing! This means they got big DF gains at the rear...
Anyone with pictures of the car with the MkIII wing?

They were above Mclaren though, so maybe they are getting better?
