What experience do you need to get into a Formula One company?

I am currently working for an Aerospace company, which is not challanging no more and I am not learning anything new. Focused on getting to work for one of the teams, I need to make the correct next step, but I don't think I can compete with anyone.

Is it possible for someone at the age of 27 to apply for a graduate position?

I don't know too much about the smaller series but do they take on graduates, or juniors?

First of all, where do you live?

From what I've heard having experience in motorsport is preferred. Though they take fresh students they're most probably doctorates with really high degrees.


What's your field of experience? Aerodynamics, electronics, etc?

I am currently a Composite Design Engineer, specialise in 3D Modelling, as well as being invovled in design, production, quality and technical sales everyday as part of my job.

Currently doing a MSc in Engineering Business Management, but I have to change this to specialise more in motorsport I think.

Say if someone was a helicopter crew chief in the military, what would that persons job out look be in the world of Formula One?

How about being part of the pit crew, or even better being a production engineer. Getting things done within a team.

Thats what I was thinking, but I was curious as to anything else outside of just being in the pit crew or a mechanic.

I think that you just have to be at the right place at the right time. I think that your best bet at getting in a F1 team is to know someone from the inside. With all the engineers aspiring to be included in the team, I think it would be short to impossible to be accepted if you are just a walk in applicant, or you have to be very lucky to be able to get such. Being part of the pit crew would also require a degree in engineering even the lollipop guy would be one. But you have to note that it also matters to take the license where a team is located to have better chances.

Well I've taken a job for another company which will help me broaden my composite design engineering experience so I have a stronger application.

I think I need to get myself to as many events as possible, if any. I've created a linkedin profile, I am too determined to quit now.

Just applied to some teams again, even though I have acceptted an offer, hopefully I can get through as Junior.
