Rose joints in present F1 car suspension??

Post

I had just watched BMW Sauber video in which I observed that the wishbone doesnt have a rose joint. Then how is it possible for an effective play? I also want to know what factors led to the usage of such a joint used in present day F1 vehicles.

On the inboard or outboard end?

Inboard, F1 wishbones are bolted directly the vehicle, and flex to provide the necessary range. Outboard, there is normally a spherical bearing contained at the tip of the wishbone.

the key word is installation stiffness and as always in life: weight (what is not there is not adding to the weight bill).

They flex so there is no need.

with f1 teams monitoring every part very closely using destructive and ndt methods to validate the simualtions and calculations you can take routes which are not really open to others.
with not much in terms of suspension travel especially at the front you can do this ,It´s not used for steering and pushrods and at the rear i don´t think all joints are blade type .

The blade type joint does reduce any stick slip effects from bearing materials so its clearly a reduction in friction forces compared to a rosejoint application and possible bind situation arising from needle ,roller or plain bushing applications.
Of course you have to be very careful as the joints are titanium and there is a limit to how many cycles it will survive.

Some cars still use them at the end of the carbon fibre Arms.. especially on the lower rear. check RedBull RB7.

These are usually refered to as "flexures".

More like "Flextures" I think.
