Q3-only, apparently

Sounds pretty pointless then. The balance of the car on those tyres will be different, so it's going to most likely be that one team will luck in to a car that is naturally balanced on them with their normal setup whilst others will be less lucky. That's going to lead to one team or another having a qualifying advantage, not through skill but through luck.

And that will be doubly so if they don't also bring tyres for them to practice on. And if the top teams get to practice on them, then they'll all need to practice on them otherwise how do you decide which teams will and will not get the quali tyres?

This is going to be a complicated, unholy mess. They either need to go for it whole hog and bring another 5 - 6 tyres per team so that they can all run them in free practice and qualifying; or they should just bring one more set of option tyres for each team and accept that as being the simplest solution to the teams doing only one run in Q3.

Just force the teams to qualify on the Primes. That'll force them to do a couple laps on each run to get the temps up.
And they rarely use multiple sets of these in the race anyway..

Problem solved!

(I actually like the idea of qualifying tyres. Bring back qualifying engines too!)

The meaning of Q are making the faster cars and drivers start ahead and put the slower ones at the back of the grid.

Quali tires risk to --- off this, maybe a car is fast with those super-super-soft tires and slow with race ones

Great...Can we have special throw away engines and special light weight barely last a lap brakes?
Then we can add no cooling ducts and special light weight wheels and suspension components.

I recall BMW's paperthin xhaust sysem for Q, lasted a few laps and cost 100 kUSD, bloody wonderful technology.
