Spnsor after 2006

Post

Can anbody tell me how teams like Renault, Ferrari, BaR, Jordan and McLaren will find sponors after the 2006, which tobacco sponsors will be banned starting 2006 onwards?

The rules have been changed towards that, now stating it is only recommendable to stop with tobacco advertising on the cars.

Anyway, I think in 2008 it will be banned in all European countries, so there will be not much of an option than to find others

It was hoped that IT companies would replace tobacco giants, but if they haven't already been snapped up they're either reducing sponsorship money or starting to have a rethink. The smarter team manager will win this one!

:? I would think that the IT industry would get more involved with F1 when tobacco sponsorship is no more. Considering everything in our ordinary lives is or will have something to do with computers!

What other multi billion dollar industry is there out there that F1 teams can turn to?

I se wher you're coming from Speedtech, but there's been a substantial economic downturn in some sponsorship markets over the last few years, especially U.S. and Japan. In all the years Jordan were with Honda they never attracted any new Japanese backing, other than Brother Industries who went to them from Williams. The rise in telecoms shares on the stock market did change the face of F1 (seeing as it's a tech driven business) and after the technology boom of the '90s,they all wanted a peice of the action...Compaq(HP),Nortel,Lucent,Marconi etc all pumped millions into the sport. Then profits of companies in the tech sector took a nosedive, and this worried people because it was seen as the next logical step after the 2006 ban but the downturn meant that 1)There was a rush to sign up IT companies ...and 2) When IT sponsors programmes came under review, most renegotiated, others cut back and some pulled out all together. Some even went bust!! This is why in spring 2002 Eddie Jordan had to make 50 people redundant. Our guest is right about the clever man coming out on top...look at Frank Williams. He 'kicked the habit' and signed up Glaxo-Smith-Klein (Niquitin CQ)Very smart!
