Mercedes GP W02

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

W02 is a nice car from aesthetics point of view. I hope that w03 will not look like Renault R29 )))

That Merc uses a lot of toe in, at the rear, and plenty of toe out in the front, or are my eyes playing tricks on me?

That setting would definitely numb some of its twitchyness

The nose & front end are pretty long. The rear is ultra short. I wonder how much of a performance will a longer rear & different sidepods will give.Probably will be easier to develop.

What does W02 have going at the back here? Just over the beam wing where it used to be sort of a monkey seat now appears to still have the monkey seat but it appears there is a duct going through it. Also, it looks as if they are running their own version of a perforated gurney at the diffuser now.

Next year I think we will see shorter cars with the top exit exhausts.
I believe the blown difusor works great with a longer wheel base and floor since the exhaust gas keeps the flow under the car and through the diffusor energised.
With the heat puimp effect of the exhaust gone next year the advantage may swing ot a shorter floor and Mercede have a years lead on that. The question isis that years expereince actually a lead or was it wasted effort?

The next Merc will be presumably longer than the W02. Source: http://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/form ... 65094.html

A very interesting article. It explains why the W02 is so bad, essentially its the short wheelbase, a bad cooling system, a bad rear suspension and the wrong ebd concept.

In the article one team member is quoted with: "The car (W02) has so many fundemental flaws, that they can't be cured comepletly (this season)."

Defintely wasted effort this year!

Yes an extended wheelbase will be the way forward as the main problem of the W02 is balance related to the high centre of gravity of the SWB design.

Odd that this was never an issue during the design phase....
More could have been done.

I'm sure it was an issue, but the focus was most likely around producing high downforce numbers with the diffuser. The article states the shorter wheelbase was used to decrease the friction on the air moving over/under the car so it has a higher velocity. Their midship exhaust helped with that idea, it just wasn't the best idea.

We will most likely see very similar cars next year between the Ferrari, Red Bull, Mercedes and Mclaren (if they abandon the U-pods).
