They said mid-October as the deadline and when an announcement would take place.

It is not mid-October yet, and there is no announcement yet.

They will struggle to catch a 'top of the line' driver after this year's efforts if Kubica can't race.

This page is no longer available (unknown reasons), so I put translation from Dutch:
Kubica drives (even) Toyota

Posted on October 13, 2011 in In the news

Formula 1 driver Robert Kubica recovering from a serious crash. Not even in his F1 car, but in a rally car last winter. In a freak accident , his car through the guardrail gespiesd. Kubica and sat directly in the path of the iron. The Pool tenauwernood survived the accident. The Renault driver is working hard on his comeback. But what does he do at Toyota Motorsport GmbH?

After dozens of hours on the operating table to have lain in bed for weeks and to be shackled, the Pool to his workout routine to build and race. For the latter, he travels to Cologne, where Toyota Motorsport GmbH 's. There is a racing simulator in which the Pool will again practice rounds. The Toyota simulator is regarded as one of the best in the world.

After Kubica again familiar with driving, he crawls back behind the wheel of a Renault test car and goes to the 'real' job. That will take some getting used to.

moment of truth then.

Can you still drive robert?

Are your arms doing what your brain tells them to do?

Tough questions that need to be answered.

Race routine sounds interesting though. Maybe he's not on the simulator yet.
For Sure!!

What needs testing other than his driving (reaction times and such are not 'race routine'). For that he must be in the simulator and if not then whats he doing???

The Iceman lurketh. 8)

I lost faith in Senna and petrov now. I think Kimi can take Senna's seat since Bob may not meet the deadline, then Robert take petrov's mid season 2012.

Maybe I'm being overly sentimental, but I think Bruno (he's not earnt the surname yet  ) needs more time in the car to be fully judged...and, I don't know, but how can you possibly get back in a car after this accident and be as fast as before? I think, even if you don't realise, there must be a mental barrier in your head that at some point just tells you to slow down...

And Kimi...please bring back Kimi.

I doubt Robert has many ambitions to return to those .Basically they faded away more and more after a decent start into the season.
A change of driver was what they came up with but the speed of the car is not good enough .It seems senna drags petrov down more than anything else...measley 6 points since the summerbreak ....and they are lucky FI,Sauber and TR have all shown streaks of performance but in the end this helps renault -just when FI seems to close the gap suddenly TR has found a second wind and steals valuable points...
