Re: Rules mandate low noses for 2012

The combination of the lowering of the nose height and the banning of blown diffusers is going to result in a huge loss of traction if I am not mistaken. The teams will have to focus a lot more on teh rear wing for downforce. Will this increase the degradation rate of the tyres?
Generally I don't care about what people say. I have to be clear with myself. When everything goes well, people celebrate you, when you make mistakes people criticize you.

If you're talking of loss of rear downforce I think this wouldn't be good for wear/graining, yes, but will be good for degradation. The Pirellis this year seem to degrade in an inversely proportional manner to pace (i.e. going through a corner faster degrades them more) which was one of the things that seems to have caught out Red Bull at circuits where they were expected to dominate like Suzuka or Silverstone - they were going through corners so fast that it was hurting tyres. But yes wear/graining would probably go high.

However does anyone know how the rules are worded? Does it only specify that the TIP of the nose has to be below axle height? Or how does it word it? For example, are RB5/6 style nose ridges; which are much higher than the RB7's nose ridges, allowed?

As it stands, from the end of the 2011 rules, there is no limit on tip height, and there is no Ban on V ridges, but the point at which the curvature of the nose begins is 15cm earlier than in 2011, so noses will be a bit lower, but it won't be a massive difference.

Wait so the nose tip DOESN'T have to be lower than the axle just yet?

Not that I am aware of, I think that comes into effect in 2014, but I'm not sure, we can't be certain of anything until the 2012 regs are released, which will probably be in around December.

I doubt we'll be seeing V ridges in 2012 though, seems to be a lack of room for them.

Maybe you could care to explain to us why you think Traction's post is worth laughing at?

I thought the same too at first; and I talked to Scarbs earlier in the year; with him saying as such; but I was told by another member (who I can't for the life of me remember, in another thread, I think) that it wasn't.

I think Traction's post about traction is correct, there is going to be a loss in rear downforce, mostly due to the EBD ban, but the slightly lower noses will restrict airflow to the diffuser a tiny amount. The less rear downforce there is, the harder it will be to get better traction, but I'm sure the teams have solutions to this.

I saw your commuication with scarbs on twitter, and from what is known at the moment, I don't think there is a limit on tip height (apart from under 550mm, which is in effect currently) coming into force in 2012, but again, the 2014 regulations may well be coming in early.

I found this on the F1 website after Hungary,
'Ferrari tried a lot of new components in Hungary on Friday, even some aero solutions that could be useful on the 2012 car, which will have a differently shaped cockpit. Both Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa tested this front wing, which features an additional upper-deck flap absent on the regular configuration.'

This could this mean that the 2014 tub and nose regs come into play early? I don't know, we'll just have to wait and see.

Funny that. I seem to remember seeing the 2014 regs floating around the FIA website, but not the 2012 ones yet...

Yeah, seems strange!

Going on the 2011 regs, expect the 2012 regs to be published to the public around December time.

December is very late is it not? What if there was some fundamental part of the 2012 concept of the teams, that were disallowed by the 2012 regs? :?

I think the teams already have the 2012 regulations, but they're not released to the public until December.

Sam Michael seemed to know about the 2012 exhaust regulations, so this must be the case.

They're not there, however at the bottom of the 2011 regs, there is a section on changes for 2012.
