The red cone says that even if the exhaust is in the yellow zone box and pointing upwards, there is a second check to ensure the exhaust jet doesn't interact with the influential bodywork

Here's a better image.

Well it looks pretty water tight to me. What about putting vanes inside the pipes, is that legal?

As scarbs said on twitter, you could use the suspension members in a smart way.. Or put a monkey seat in the middle in the free zone (where Merc has had it all season and McLaren just added a little wing last race)

You mean directing vanes as you might find in an air conditioner?

Suspension arms maybe, monkey seat is outside the red area so its ok anyway.
Yes raymond, exactly what i mean.

i thought about that the other day too

also, going by the yellow boxes, is there not a tiny area where the exhaust could go more on the side of the pod than on top? or is that just because the boxes are simplifying the rules?

If the yellow box is only that large and the red sections size is accurate too than why do they need the red section? The red bits can't reach any wings.

As per Scarbs piece vanes aren't allowed, and there's a 3 degree field of "view" from the exit of the exhausts that can't have bodywork.

Conventional wisdom calls for Ferrari to be the main benefactor, as they did in Silverstone; and for McLaren (who were at sea in Silverstone, and in pre-season before they used the Red Bull copy EBD) or Red Bull (with the most experience with the EBD concept) to be hit the hardest.
I'm pretty confident that McLaren and RBR have the resources to design a car around a non-blown diffuser. McLaren I think was hit so hard in Silverstone, simply because this years car happens to be build around the concept of the diffuser... a concept that still isn't working as it should have originally.
Pretty confedent to say they will go back to the 2009/2010 maps for initial runs before going out and getting maps specific for 2012 as early as Day 2 of testing as Day 1 is usually used for data collection and correlation to numbers from CFD and tunnels.
I would expect most teams to run without EBDs at the young driver test in Abu Dhabi.

I expect they could still run with EBD's...they will be testing new tyres. Better to test them against a known quantity than not.

The tyres are staying the same I believe - just that their compounds are changing.

Even just compound change is enough change.

I would want to do some running without off-throttle blowing at the very least. They should have the chance to do some of each. Can they bring to chassis?

How much would the exhaust help if it blew down the middle U section of the Mclaren side pods?

Interesting question on that option i already think and i m afraid it will be to low to require the 2012 exhaoust regs! And the problem is also the angle?
