McLaren MP4-27 Mercedes (pre-launch speculation)

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Sorry to go back a few pages but I'm just catching up with this thread. Am I right in thinking that Connie is suggesting that next years macca monocoque will look something like this. Please don't be shocked into awe at my technical drawing skills btw.

Hi Tyler, I'm having trouble with my flickr account. I can e-mail the pic to you if you want to PM me your address. Maybe you can post it up on here for me while I try to figure out the issue with flickr?

BTW, it is just a very quick 2d sketch and not to scale or anything.

The current nose may (just) be legal for next year. HRT may not be, I think the front bulkhead is too high.

I stil don't understand this new nose scarbs has thrown at us, at first I thought the chassis height was staying the same, Sam Michael obviously thought so also, anyone has the 2012 reading on this?
Are we going to see uglier cars next year? There is not much to be changed except
periscope exhausts but rumour has it that the nose will be lower and cars could look
like HRT F111.

WELL THERE ARE STILL WAYS OF MAKING THIS LOOK REASONABLE, BUT THIS
ISSUE WITH THE NOSE COMES ABOUT BECAUSE THE CHASSIS CAN BE UP TO
625MM HIGH AND THE NOSE ONLY 550MM HIGH. IT ORIGINATES FROM THE FIA
WANTING TO NOT HAVING THE CRASH STRUCTURE (NOSE) ABOVE THE 550MM HIGH
SIDE OF THE COCKPIT NEXT TO THE DRIVER TO REDUCE THE CHANCE OF DRIVER
INJURY. ORIGINALLY THE WHOLE CHASSIS WAS GOING TO BE LOWERED TO 550MM
HIGH, BUT TEAMS WANTED THE ABILITY TO CARRY CHASSIS OVER FROM 2011 TO
2012 SO A COMPROMISE WAS PUT FORWARD AT TWG AND ACCEPTED.

yes i would say so. There a lot of performance to be gained from a flexing fw. Ferrari are obviously onto that and i expect macca to be. With no EBD (or at least at it is today) then they will look everywhere to gain performance and this surely is one avenue.

The Scarbs image matches what Sam Michael described in your quote. 625 high chassis, 550 high nose.

I'm not sure how accurate this is or if it was worth it. But I've given it ago real quick whilst at work anyway so might as well upload it. angle is slightly out though.

Your wing and wheels are both a tiny bit on the small side. Either way, it looks like the -26 is very close to being legal for next year.

I'm sure there are better pictures of both out there. Just looking at the -26 anyway and how the chassis is below the top of the wheel, I'm pretty sure its legal.

I never realised McLaren's bulkhead was already rather low, and here I was thinking the lower bulkhead/better visibility would help Hamilton with his...adventures for 2012.

All this wording is on the FIA public website, under F1 2011 technical regulations. There's a section at the end with the 2012 changes.

Scarbs, the dash bulkhead isn't fixed at 625mm, it can be between 550mm and 625mm high.

I'd expect lower dash bulkheads in 2012.
