A really weird double cut-out. What its use anyway?

It doesn't appear to have changed, but a high res pic would be better.

it's a bit awkward as the pictures were taken at different angles, but there does seem to be a slightly different size proportion of stick-outy-endplate-bits in the pictures.
Nothing massively different though.
