Post here all non technical related topics about Formula One. This includes race results, discussions, testing analysis etc. TV coverage and other personal questions should be in Off topic chat.

What do you think of the prospect of a USGP 2012 at Austin Texas

Good thinking. Place has good infra structure and nice climate in winter.

Not good as it has no motor sport tradition in the US.

OK, just back from the site.

- Lots of trucks bringing in dirt & dumping it around the esses.

- A group of people viewed the site earlier from the observation deck.

- Tavo Hellmund's presence was not confirmed.

- No other construction activity was observed.

How very typical.
And he wants two grands prix in the country that imprisons both the largest number and percentage of its citizens!

So Hairy Scott....is this construction in earnest or just "fiddle-farting" around. Any chance a 2012 date could happen if hell freezes over?

Hard to say. Didn't see any actual construction activity today, but they have been hauling in filler materials for months at a high rate of 20, 30, even 40 trucks per hour for weeks on end. That all stopped when everything shut down, then resumed today.

Re: 2012...yeah, I think it COULD happen should a massive amount of resources be committed to a well-done, highly prioritized plan implemented by the right people.

Will that happen?

Well this is quite a bummer, 2012 will be a very important year for me and it now seems like F1 won't be a part of it. I'll just have to wait until 2013, but as long as I get to see/hear the V8's I'm fine.

I think they were meeting with Bernie, so let's hope that this isn't more public posturing, and the negotiations are over and done with.

I'm pissed off. I thought this was a done deal after the local legal issues were resolved.
I had a suspicion (although in retrospect I was in denial) when I got into a chat with one of the proponents on the USGP facebook page. This proponent told me she was a communications major at UT Austin. That is just perfect. Tavo the sleazebag got free advertising and she got college credit for the project.

Makes no sense to blame Hellmund. Epstein is the guy who failed. That is obvious to all who have considered the facts. By trying to boot out Hellmund and playing hardball with Bernie he only managed to loose the guaranteed METF money and pushed the price up. How dumb is that?

Yes, I stand wholly corrected when it comes to my casting the blame for this fiasco at the feet of the government of the State of Texas. (I guess I've just grown accustomed to pointing in such general directions when it comes to bureaucratic snafus, especially within these weird Southern governments.)

It's patently obvious now that this Epstein guy is punching way above his weight class. I think if this thing gets done, it will only be because someone has shown him a measure of mercy.

I stand corrected for laying the blame on Tavo.

Not to me I'm afraid, I can only see Helmund as MrE's "mini-me", a profiteer who was trying to make out like a bandit without risking any of his own money. When Epstein, and later Combs, figured that out, they saw no reason to work with him.

Looks like Bernie didn't go for their contract, but he is holding out for his own. Why don't they sign already!
