Lotus E20 Renault

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I don't know if it's just the color of the Caterham with the stepped nose, or the fact that I've gotten used to it now, but I don't really have that much of an issue with it anymore. I actually think the E20 looks pretty good, the best of the stepped nosed cars anyway.

The noses will be even lower in 2014 because of further rule changes. I'd rather have "ugly" cars for 2 years than have any of these amazingly talented drivers get hurt from getting hit in the head with a pretty-nosed F1 car.

If my eyes are not deceiving me, they moved front suspension forward, some 50 to 100mm. That enabled them to make the nose longer in the part where it widens to fit the bulkhead, also enabling them to increase the height of upper plane more gradually.

Just wait till you see first pics of car in the garage with nose removed. Front attach points of suspension arms are almost totally in front of the chassis, probably the steering rack too.

EDIT: Been comparing their car from previous season and new one - the suspension is in same place, significantly more up front than on some other teams, that enabled smoother design of the nose. For easier understanding - Renault has less front-reaching bulkhead, but that also means that nose spans further backwards.

It's not the steepest we've seen, but steeper than it looks from the angles that were shown

Thanks, from this picture ( http://cdn.f1zone.net/news/wp-content/g ... 012-10.jpg )we can clearly see it's a new car, the sidepods are more sculpted and more at the back comparing to R31.

This sketch explaining why Lotus has such smooth transition. As I've wrote in my previous post, it is due to difference in position of suspension vs. chassis.

It is a steep transition. It's the angle of the shots plus the livery. Here's how truly steep it is.

Here's a great close up shot of the car. You can see that huge splitter they're using as well as wire hanging from the bargeboard. Right click>view image>zoom in
