Ferrari F2012

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

May I remind you all of last season.

Everyone thought Mercedes was the 2nd fastest car, Williams and STR would be challenging for podiums, and Mclaren would be tailenders...
No, I ( and many others) thought the Merc was a tyre eating dog, and it was.
OK, my main point is don't read in to testing, it'll get you no where.

Just gonna have to sit it out till Melbourne Quali...

we're only going to see what these cars are capable of by the 3rd test.

All they're doing now is finding the bugs.
If the F2012 has any they will be wildly apparent in Barcelona

Hydraulic problem for Ferrari, where is Rory Byrne when you need him...

I agree with the sentiments of Tozza and many others that trying to judge a car on testing pace is futile.

however what makes this season more enjayable for me already as a ferrari fan is that they have changed the way they work. Seems more productive and more guided and more focused than last year.

the F2012 has more sensors and cameras and measuring doohikies on it than i have ever seen on a ferrari at any one time. the constant speed runs are intriguing to me as if ferrari did them last year i didnt notice it.

Something needed to change from last year and more and more to me it looks like it has. the way the team is working and gathering data has definitely changed. their bravery in design choices certainly has. Whether that translates into performance of the car is another thing but at least they arent boring.

i think this new methodology in ferrari bodes well for the development pace of the F2012 if not the out of the box pace of the car.

From Scarbs' Twitter feed.

@edosel: You think Ferrari will be able to sort out these issues they're having at the moment in time for Melbourne?

@ScarbsF1: yes, they are trying lots of things and seeing how they work. The car is far from definitive at this stage

Is that gold line near the rear wheel a trick of the light/ reflection or is it a gold tape cover for some wires?

Looks like a gold tape covering a bunch of wires for DRS directed toward the front right endplate....I could be wrong

I haven't seen discussion yet about Ferrari's open crash structure. A link or thoughts?

Those wires could be for pressure sensors near the footplate.

Whereas the odd surface finished parte at the base of the podwing could be related to vibration issues of the podwing itself

About opened crash structure: as we have seen, every little trick to lower base pressure after the diffuser is employed, so also the inside of the crash tube is used as an air outlet (with its own little gurney it seems).
