Mercedes AMG F1 W03

I have picked up from reading posts here that the step on the bargeboard sheds a vortex.
1. Is that correct?
2. Why do they want a vortex there?

vortices are used to create a 'skirt' along the sides to help trap the airflow under the car.

I also have a theory that vortices should be used under the car itself to speed up airflow and create downforce :)

Only 4 laps in 45 min. No timed laps, just instillation laps.

The bargeboards in fact shed many vortices which pass under the floor, and follow the sidepod undercut

At the Jerez test I remember Ferrari having to cut away burnt body work, and they didn't get much stick for it. The Mercedes is showing slightly burnt paint but seems to be getting more attention than Ferrari did when Ferrari had a much larger problem.

The sidepods are lower than usual, or it's me who thinks that?
I find the sidepods lower than Ferrari's but with a bigger intake. True?

Any burnt bodywork is bound to bring back bad memories of last season's testing/races. Hence more hue and cry
Also I remember discussions in the speculation thread that the new team of big desginers/tech directors etc have joined late in the game to positively influence this years car too much. Now if we think this car has a lot of inputs from them, then we wouldn't know what to believe?

You are definitely correct.
The W03 seems to have the lowest sidepods of all the cars.
The sidepods of the Ferrari by contrast look very high, possibly one of the highest.
I'm going to bet that the W03 is the quickest car on the straights this year.

Let's wait and see with the burnt bodwork - it could just be the paint that's burning and not serious at all.
We'll know soon enough if they start putting gills on the car like last year.
Yes the new guys did join a bit late to have that much influence on the car but Bell as well as the others have a lot of experience - they can surely help move this car forward now and will be involved in any solutions if there's a problem.
Lat year this time was very different - the team didn't even have a Technical Director!

From what I can see, the burnt paint seems to be from the hot exhaust gases washing over and down the bodywork, rather than whatever is under the bodywork getting too hot and it burning outwards. I think it's nothing to worry about unless the team or a rival team bring it up.

If you take a look at the side of the W03, the exhaust exits pretty far forward. I believe the manifold sits where the burnt part is and the final exhaust comes out like a swan's neck. That makes it pretty clear that there is a lot of heat on small ground causing the paint to burn. We've seen this with RedBull that those surfaces are just covered by black heat resistant bits, where as MGP still try to keep it as silver as possible.

Regardless of what the benefits either exhausts have, I think if MGP went for a RedBull solution, exiting further backwards, this would probably reduce heating a bit. But so far I'm not concerned by the burnt bits...to me it seems to be more a case of Mercedes trying to avoid as many black panels as possible, so it's just a cosmetic thing ;)

On this picture I dont se burnt paint as a result of high temps inside the sidepods. I belive this is the result of coanda effect as hot gases are attached on to the body and by that they burn the paint. From this picture you can actualy see how and where thos hot gases are travelling. Am I wrong?
