Mercedes AMG F1 W03

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Yes that should be for the fuel and therefor on both sides of the car (atleast in previous years, don't know if they still do that for an emergency refueling during a race).

Btw. I'm happy that they managed this year to provide a proper heat shielding to avoid (almost) burning paint. =D>
Not performance or reliability related, but still looks better :)

In this picture (click to enlarge) if you look closely you can clearly see the some flow vis down in the stater hole. So that how probably the way they are blowing this diffuser extension hole on top. Like some of you already suggested.

Image

I was trying to find the duct that Crucial_Xtreme and Scarbs were talking about. The rear structure seems fully enclosed. They could also be blowing that slot on the top of the beam wing.

Image
The way they placed those sensors just on the inner side of upper suspension arm suggest that exhaust plume is effectively directed to that area.

Another picture of front wing.

I thought you could see the duct that went through underneath the crash structure here.

I don't think the one Crucial was talking about is anything but a streamlined cover for the gearbox and suspension mounts personally.

Yes, I noticed that semicircular shape of crash structure.

I think mercedes are doing one of two things: sucking the air in the center of the diffuser through the starter hole on to the channel above it with the ejector effect.
Or.. they have a mini double diffuser with it's leading edge the trailing edge of starter hole.

I'm prescribing to the first one.
For Sure!!

For what it's worth; this is an excerpt from the MPH column on this week's Autosport:
Now take a look at the back of the Mercedes. See the way the crash structure underside is merged with the trailing edge of the diffuser? It looks suspiciously like an extra exit ramp – just like they used to look when double diffusers were all the rage. But what would be the point of having the extra ramp when you are no longer allowed the slots in the floor to feed it with airflow? Ah well, what if you trained the flow from the hot exhaust and from the cooling exit at the bottom of the engine cover to a place that created a pressure differential that energised the flow coming through the diffuser. Especially if you used the splitters within the diffuser to turn the air as much as possible towards that upper chamber...

OK correct me if I'm wrong (and I probably am) but this is what I think is going on in the middle of that diffuser.

Image

They are using that top exit to draw air out through the starter motor hole, which is angled to be an intake rather than the usual blown slot(I think the innovo concept has something similar)

I don't think that top exit could be of diffusr like benefit without an entrance somewhere below the floor(like the DDD had). Which is now illegal.

gearbox cooling air is exiting from the "double diffuser" (for want of a better word)

Ferrari used something similar to this in 2009 but it was across the whole top of the diffuser rather than just the middle.

Do you mean the (black) Lotus Renault last year, rather? Their rad exit (which Red Bull has the cannon for) came out in a thin line over the diffuser.

Testing chatter has been moved to the testing thread. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=12073&view=unread#unread

If your comment isn't about an object that is on this car then it doesn't belong in this thread!

If Mercedes are having rear tyre issued they could always revert to the solution introduced at last years canadian gp where they increased the pick-up points on the rear suspension which improved tyre wear. They should have been the last team complaining about tyre issues as the 3 days they ran in Jerez they were only for testing out the 2012 pirelli tyres and they stated after the test that they studied alot about the 2012 tyre.
