Vodafone McLaren MP4-27 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

That was the rumor – clearly not true.

The pictures (albeit very limited number of them) on Formula1.com show the snowplough back on the car. Hopefully get some more pictures available online soon after the session is complete.

Good run for Lewis today after the (somewhat) struggles for Jenson yesterday.

The rear of the floor and diffuser is made out the same texture-less dark brown material that they used on the shrouding of the fan exhaust of the mp4-26. Very interesting.

So is the splitter so I doubt it's only for heat. Probably just very hard since I noticed some dents in the floor before they cut it out and put metal there and then returned with the brown composite.

The whole floor has a very different sheen than we're used to seeing. It almost looks painted black.

Not the normal checkered carbon fibre any more that is for sure.

I'm thinking that the floor and diffuser are painted, since the bits around the wheel that we know are metal are now exactly the same color and sheen.

The bodywork upstream of the exhaust exit looks like it has been revised to increase the downwash reaching it from over the top of the sidepod. Compare old:

EDIT: pics removed, better examples posted by other user.

The old bulge looked very much like they could be swapped and replaced for a different solution. The bodywork proceeding them was neutral, and they sort of stuck out a lot more.

The new ones are far more integrated, and the bodywork ahead of them is more "swooping" and in line with them. This suggests that after testing a lot with the Bulge style exhaust, McLaren are satisfied enough not to try other variations of exhaust solution and are now refining their first choice... which can only be a good thing!
