Fuel makes the car go forwards. Downforce makes the car go down.

You can't get energy for the latter from anywhere other than the former; more df, more fuel.

Yes, I was aware of that relation, but when you read other designer's statements in a similar interviews, they never mention the increased fuel consumption. When was the last time you read that some car designer talks about new FW or RW or even new complete aero package with increased DF, and in the same sentence he mention increased fuel consumption?
Maybe I'm beating a dead horse here, but it sounded pretty suspicious. Especially when you think about how many percentage he talks about ( total DF ). He says 25% of the EBD-related DF could be recovered, and we can't assume that they didn't recovered some of it already. So the new exhaust could add let's say 10% to the rear DF ( pretty optimistic number IMHO ). Would it be so significant figure regarding fuel consumption ?

It is clear that our objective it is to win the constructors and drivers championship. The championship is too long and I don't hesitate that we will be fighting to win.

How we will be in Australia we don't really know, we are speculating with the weight of fuel of others, but we don't really know where we are. We've got great times and if our rivals are as we are we are on the right way to win and podiums.

That fuel consumption part is interesting. Doesn't it mean that they are still able to use some hot-blowing ? How otherwise could downforce be realated to fuel consumption

1) You can not claw back 25% of the downforce with a exhaust flow that is only 10% as effective as last year.

2) I would interpret poor turn-in stability to mean they do not have an effective exhaust blowing system.

He's definitely playing around, although Ferrari may decide to go the Sauber/RB style. Personally I think the McLaren solution would be easiest to employ on the F2012. I'm interested in seeing which way they go.

Pat Fry Implied that he's making it in his post testing interview. He even said it showed more down force in the simulations.

Horner about Ferrari:

Horner said it would be foolish to write off Ferrari so early in the season despite their problems in testing.

"Winter testing is inconclusive in so many ways," he added. "Last year Ferrari looked like they were the dominant team going into the first race, but as it transpired they only won one race.

"It's so difficult to say. We've had our blinkers on and focused on our own programmes.

"They've got a great team, they haven't fully shown their hand yet. I think they're more competitive than people believe they are. I'm sure the car looks a handful but sometimes a difficult car can be a quick car so it would be foolish to write off Fernando (Alonso) going into Melbourne."

No he said they're first exhaust solution showed more downforce in simulations, but it needs more development time.

I don't really get it. So Ferrari say they took some risk with the F2012, something the fans said they were always afraid to do. Now they're proud to have taken some risk. Now it turns out it doesn't really work the way they wanted. And now all hell breaks loose. And what do they do? They go back to their old conservative ways, undo all the risk and revert back to a 'safer' option.

Fry said the exhausts in their original position worked best but it was unstable and unpredictable. It's exactly on that point that Ferrari have to show that they are willing to really take risk. Continue on that path, make it work. Suffer a few races but make it work. Don't go back to a safer option just because Luca starts yelling and losing his temper.

The team doesn't work well at the moment, they have no clue what they want. Wether the F2012 turns out to be quick or not, their team needs to figure out which way they want to go.
