I'm sure that hole in the Ferrari nose is for driver cooling at probably the hottest race of the year. There's no reason to have it there for any other reason.

+1
That is a fairly standard aperture for driver cooling on the Ferrari.

Do we think this air intake on the nose does the same thing as the Red Bull's? Has it been established that the Red Bull's is for anything other than driver cooling?

I think it's driver cooling. The F248 had the same duct, at the same place too.

Yes, driver cooling. It's the hottest race of the year. The drivers need it! :)

Long time follower (1999) and never thought I would have anything of importance to contribute. Not that I have now ...

On topic, I get an annoying feeling when I see the above pictures. The car looks so badly finished and plain dirty. One would think they do not need to patch up to this amount, and I can not imagine that all those panels are dummies?

No, he didn't say that at all. I do wish people would stop doing this.

What we've had so far is one race of the season, and what Gary said about McLaren's low nose is that they're going to have a smaller volume of air to work with under the nose which could well limit their ability to develop later on.

I agree, the orange-peel paint job on that deflector looks...uuh?

I agree! The acer duct exit looks very messy, the wing mirror fitting looks very untidy and that new vented panel on the top of the tub doesn't even fit properly. Also, look at the photo with of the sidepod turning vein, the paintwork looks very poor. It looks like paint in the intial stages of crazing.

Generally speaking the gaps between the panels are just too untidy! They need to work on their pattern cutting and laying up techniques because poorly fitting parts mess up the air flow. In this respect the F2012 looks more primitive than an F2000.

Yep , and it looks like the "edges" of the pieces don't smoothly attach to the other pieces .

Like here .. the piece about the upper-left screw . It's not realy smooth following the line of the rest of the body work :

Yeah, same with the driver cooling duct. Lada style build quality. All these little bits surely must add up to hurt aero performance. The exhaust solution is untidy beyond belief.

Seriously, i'm not an expert but the quality of the exit of the acer duct seems unaccpeptable for an f1 team like Ferrari. Moreover the specific configuration of the exhaust doesn't seem to require the acer duct as it is in the picture.
