I don't think its appropriate for them to be silent on the issue though; to do so would imply they are oblivious to the situation. Is that preferable to making comments on a situation they perhaps do not fully understand? ...maybe. maybe not. But I don't think they should just shut up about it. It would sound like they're pretending that everything's gumdrops and roses over there. On the other hand, if the race should be cancelled, which it probably should, somebody closer to F1 should be saying so or it won't happen.

In cases such as these, I think F1 journalists should either exercise that last bit of their job title or restrict their comments to matters that directly relate to F1. The problem is that most F1 journalists could be more accurately described as F1 columnists, and, as such, their value is largely determined by access and by their opinions on various subjects related to F1. But, there's no place for their amateur opinions on matters of political or social concern.

If they want to bring those matters to the fore, they need to do what every other journalist in the world does: interview witnesses or experts and allow that to tell the story. Anything else lacks credibility due to unknown biases or other factual errors of hearsay.

Joe Saward is the absolute worst when it comes this. He rarely knows what he's talking about when he ventures outside of F1, but that doesn't stop him from having a set-in-stone opinion on everything. He's got his head shoved so far up his exit that he doesn't even seem to recognize how utterly foolish it makes him look. (Or maybe he's just a very self-aware and content moron.)

At any rate, that's why I don't particularly care about what anyone in F1 has to say about Bahrain.

I don't get the insults of Damon Hill on this. If he was wrong before, but has come to his senses, we should praise him for doing so, and not just see it as an opportunity to bash him for being wrong before. Not being British, I haven't paid all that much attention to him of late, but he seems to be a decent guy, and as far as I can tell did an incredible job as head of the BRDC.

How much money has he been paid to act like a clown?

Anyway, there's a little corner of my mind that's wondering if Bernie wouldn't enjoy the publicity of having the F1 race stopped by protests. Not called off, but actually stopped by protesters. Just imagining all that HD footage of teargas outside the gates and protesters marching down the front straight.

Personally, I don't see why these so-called u-turns are a reason for the sensational rhetoric. The gist of Hill's sentiments on the subject strike me as the reasonable thoughts of a man who's trying to wrap his head around a very dynamic situation with which he has absolutely no experience.

The only fools are those whose thoughts are intractable.
