Mercedes AMG F1 W03

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

you got a set of variables to adjust and that does include dampers as well as geometry .Still weight distribution is fixed so a strong tool is taken away.
speaking of setup windows and relating it to temps-as Brawn said -i think he is speaking of getting the front and rears working in the same temperature area ,so both front and rear tyres reach their highest working temperatures at the same time when being pushed .
Brawn spoke of a optimum temp which you could be over and under 15°C defining your working window. So if your front tyre is at the top of that window when the rear is just reaching the lower end of the working window you have yourself put in a situation where you might have a useful window of justa few degrees.
I´m not implying that temperature windows front end rear are the same so maybe the window for the front is a lot smaller than the rear or the other way around...

Usually set up window is suspension related, getting camber and castor correct for the given conditions. It seems they're still not sure how aggressive they can go which is really indicative of simply not knowing enough about the car.
The first two races were both lottery's in terms of tyre usage. They just need to find that optimum compromise between camber and castor.
Their current settings probably gives them best mechanical grip and they don;t want to give that up but somethings got to give. Ultimately the long term solution is going to involve some tweaks to the suspension geometry
is it me as the videos from Malaysia, Alonso and Perez were running higher negative camper than others?
Maybe thats why they were so fast than others?

Its tough to eyeball camber accurately... but normally wouldn't you run less camber in the wet?

Yeah you would. Unless your car was hideously cold on its tyres and needed help heating the fronts. Unlikely in Sepang's long corners.

Hello,

does someone know whether Mercedes are bringing some updates for this race ? Lotus and Mclaren are. I do not want to see Lotus in front of the great MS !

Rumour is that Lotus will officially protest Mercedes DRS driven F-duct tomorrow.

Well at least by doing it on Thursday they give Merc a chance if the Stewards decide it's not legal.

Red Bull I think are just being political - developing their own version whilst trying to prevent others from devoting resources to it. After all, this is the team who built an entirely optimized version of the RB7 just for one circuit (Monza), they don't have to choose where to spend resources.

Lotus, I think are truly sour about their RRH being banned pre-season, and want a bit of revenge. Which I guess you can understand, since given the clear pace of the E20 one might suppose that with the RRH it could have been the fastest car out there. Rumour was that it was Mercedes whose specially targetted clarification questions trigger the FIA to change its decisions on that innovation.

While I personally would prefer a more "pure" F1 without all the political stuff, it nonetheless clearly is part of what F1 is, and has been for a long time. I honestly think there is no-one better than Ross Brawn to deal with the politics side.

Oh, my rumor is that FIA will approve it. For the third consecutive time.
I really can't understand why they're forcing FIA this way, after (banned) reactive suspensions this is the best innovation seen so far this season.
More than political, it's starting to look like a kid game...

Yeah exactly you want a more upright tyre to maximise the footprint and be able to channel away.

going the other way you would want quite a lot of camber if you want a long contact patch but you'd need a tyre designed for this and I don't think the Pirelli wets are

Then they were making a desperate gamble that the race was going to be wet. They would also have to use these settings during the dry qual.

Along with naming rights issues, Lotus should focus on getting their car set up and faster rather than waste time on protests of devices that have already been approved

What is so political about competitors having complete different interpretations of a rule?

What is so political about disagreeing with an official's interpretation and trying to get another view from a different official?

Maybe, and just maybe, the fact that someone already decided on the matter. Twice.

a name.
