Vodafone McLaren MP4-27 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

This is not the case.

Any device that works to reduce drag will gain most benefit at higher speeds, where there is most drag. This is especially so because drag increases nonlinearly with speed.

So, because a lighter car can exit corners faster, and because it can accelerate faster, it will also gain most effect from an F-duct, because it will be going faster almost all of the time.

Lowe has said big upgrades for China.

Expecting reasonable step forward but also expecting the competition to have made steps too.

Lot of conversation about an f/w duct that isn't actually on the car ....

Here's a better place  viewtopic.php?f=6&t=12199&view=unread#unread

If it is not on the car, then it shouldn't be in this thread!

Surely this is the place to discuss whether it would benefit McLaren.
Became a McLaren fan in the late 70's when I ended up laminating their Kevlar nosecones.

Take your pick:

- Generic discussion of blown wings is generic
- The blown wing is a feature on the Merc W03
- It's speculation if McLaren will have a blown wing

The car threads have very simple maxim - If it is not on the car then it's not in this thread.

Which bring us to the small matter that this post is rather off topic.

Anyone fancy opening an "Over zealous Moderators" thread?

Can't help but feel that debating whether the FW F Duct would benefit the Mp4 27 is an acceptable subject for this thread.

Any thoughts?

Yeah, real shame, as I was hoping we would just get a normal race under normal conditions. I still feel Hamilton will take pole and start 5th though.
Any news on what upgrades they are brining to China? Specific of course :)

He'd start 6th. 1 + 5 = 6.

I actually think his strategy will depend on the weather forecast. If it's forecast to be wet then he'll run the softs and aim for pole. If it looks like it'll be dry then he'll either aim for second but only do a single Q3 run to save a set of tyres and bias his setup for the race, or he may aim for 3rd or so but qualify on the prime tyres.

Should be interesting to see how able he is to fight back. The car is quick and if he goes for an aggressive tyre strategy then he should have the pace to force others into responding, neutralising any tyre wear differences until the final stint.

How do you think they recognized that they had a gearbox problem: oil analysis, operation data, post race dyno test?

Any other possibilities?

That's what they said. Maybe some experimental stuff ready to test properly at Mugello.

Would be awesome if they had something new on the car that required a gearbox change to fit (like a new gearbox casing!) and Lewis decided to go for it and take the risk.

Unlikely though as otherwise they'd have tested it on the Friday first :(

Could it have been damaged in transit, hence only just finding out? Or have they just completed an ultrasound check on the CF or something like that?
