Im not sure you do. How can history say he started from pole position when he was 6th 7th etc. He might qualify fastest but I dont think that counts as a pole START come Sundays stats.

No Thursday pictures I can find today. Infact not just Mclaren but a general lack of tech stuff photographed today :(

BetFair show for qualifying

Hamilton 2.3
Button 6.4
Vettel 8

and for victory the odds are:

Button 3.2
Vettel 5.7
Hamilton 6.2

If it remains dry I think there is good reason to believe the odds will be converted to reality. I would love to see Seb getting 2nd or 1st.

Correct. The penalty is applied AFTER qualifying.

It does seem rather arbitrary. After all the Mercedes rear wing appears to have a cover attached to the flap that's primary purpose appears to be to cover the ducts, yet that is deemed legal.

I've called for this in the past but the FIA really should set up a formal procedure via which a team can ask for a definitive ruling on a particular device so they can get approval before they invest the time and money in developing the part. At the moment it appears they can ask Charlie and then hope that the FIA remains consistent with Charlie's initial opinion.
Yep. This is the same FIA that let the ruling go through that a suspension dampner (the TMD) on the Renault a few years back was a "movable aerodynamic device." Come up with something clever? That's cool, they'll just wait until you invest a few million before declaring it illegal.

I think your incorrect. Obviously its applied after as its otherwise impossible. When the final grid classification is released LH wont be on pole, he wont start the Chinese GP from pole position so the records will reflect that. Say JB gains the pole through this pen. End of the year will there be a list that has 21 pole positions sitters (JB and LH next to China) recorded out of 20 races, course there wont. There will be Button next to China pole as that is where he started the race from.

One thing for sure Ray, is Petronas is getting a LOT of free exposure as pictures of the wing are plastered on every racing publication and sporting site around.

I get the feeling we all think Hamilton for pole, Button to take second, and thus Button to start from pole in the race and Hamilton in 6th?. (correcting my mistake and bad math from earlier :P)

Makes me want to invest with Petronas ;)
If someone said to me that you can have three wishes, my first would have been to get into racing, my second to be in Formula 1, my third to drive for Ferrari.

The records are for qualifying.. If you cross the line in q3 fastest you will have achieved pole position the timings don't account for penalties so as a result the penalty is a race day penalty.

Grid positions and qualifying positions are stated separately.

I think if Finger Boy can have his way with Abbey this weekend, he might end up on top. And since it could be a wet affair, I like his chances of at least penetrating that threesome on the podium. Either way, I think we'll experience a lot of movement inside this race, and that should produce an exciting climax.

Back to you, Bob.

Pole position statistics are counted on Sunday morning (the official grid printout from the FIA). So let's say Hamilton takes P1 in Q3. Button takes P2 in Q3. Button would be credited with pole position. Pole position is not the fastest qualifier; it's the frontmost starter, as of the FIA official grid printout.

So let's say Button takes P2 in Q3, then by virtue of Hamilton's penalty he starts 1st. Sunday morning, grid comes out, FIA says he's first. That's pole position. If for whatever reason he cannot start the race and has to withdraw, Button would still be the pole position man; even though the guy who was initially in P3 (P2 after Hamilton's penalty) is starting at the front of the pack.

Hope this clears things up.

Two words, Acer duct. I mean, its one of the focal points of the most popular team.

FP1 is ruined once again by rain. RBR were trying a new McLaren style exhaust on Weber's car and the original mark1 exhaust on Vettel's. Vettel's DRS failed and so they probably did not get good data.

The last 9 minutes will be run on prime tyres after Vettel did a 1:44 on inters.

Karthikeyan is still acting like a fool. He got in the way of Button again who was on a flying lap. The guy is not learning from his mistakes.

The McLaren is again the car to beat.

There's something in those Saubers, both Perez and Kobayashi (who wasn't out there all too often) pipped Webber's time pretty quickly. Same with Hamilton and both Mercedes. I'm thinking that qualifying will see the Mclarens and Mercedes close out the first two rows.

All you need is for the whole top 5 to get a 5 spot penalty and because the penalties are issued in the order they were given then Hamilton would get the pole, simple
