Re: Ferrari F2012

I know it's been a very very competitive season and we've had four different winners. Our race pace isn't as bad as our qualifying pace. Can anyone take out the gap, on average, from Alonso's qualifying time to the polesitter.

Maybe 0.6-0.9 tenths?

Well...not exactly 0.6-0.9 tenths...u might be surprised from what u are gonna read now..

The average gap in Q3 is + 1.424s....but that said..it is only from 2 races, Malaysia and china....in Australia Alonso didn't get to Q3 and in Bahrain he didn't do a time...

So the gaps are like this:
Australia Q3: N/A
Malaysia Q3: + 1.347 s
China Q3: + 1.501 s
Bahrain Q3: N/A

Average gap: + 1.424s

So i decided to look at the gaps in Q2:

Australia Q2: + 1.025 s
Malaysia Q2: + 0.664 s
China Q2: + 0.257 s
Bahrain Q2: + 0.194 s

Average gap: + 0.535 s

Interestingly enough the gap in Q2 was getting smaller and smaller every race....and if we look at the gap excluding Australia were Alonso had that accident and could have done a better time the gap is only + 0.372 s....

Now if we look at the average gap in each race it goes like this:

Australia: + 0.371 s
Malaysia: + 0.000 s
China: + 0.664 s
Bahrain: + 1.014 s

Average gap: +0.512 s

Average gap without Malaysia where he won...so a more representative average gap is + 0.683 s....again interestingly enough...if we exclude Malaysia we can see the average race gap increase race by race in contrast with Q2 times which are decreasing race by race...

I am not making any conclusions from this...the conclusions are yours to make and share them with us...I just pointed out the facts... :D

bearing in mind Schumachers comments on the tyres,it´s obvious that car strengths /weaknesses are masked by the tyre situation .
A weak car has not the ultimate speed ....so that´s the big gap in Q3?

Having less gap in the race may be a function of the leaders having to accept that there is not much life in the tyres and so they pace themselves for what they think is the best total elapsed time over race distance...?

Safety car in Australia skews the results and time gap to 1st is not a constant in that it's always been a different car. Can we have this analysis split over the races but conpared to individual cars ie Alonso v Hamilton, Alonso v. Vettel etc?

Just to put my last comment in context of car development if we get the above analysis lets compare it over next few races with all the new parts introduced

I saw the request for the gaps to certain people so i calculated Alonso's race pace gaps to Hamilton, Vettel and Button...

Image

EDIT: i think we cannot tell anything from these gaps and the gaps I calculated on the previous post are much more helpful...

Awwwwhhh, come on! Figures such as these have absolutely no relevance to ANYTHING. Why not try and discuss some technical matters?

because we are waiting for the rest of the upgrades....and i only calculated the gaps because someone requested it...and if u took the time to read my post....u would see that i said my self that no conclusion can be drawn...

Ferrari test driver Marc Gene says Ferrari will make a large jump with the Spanish GP updates. How that compares to their rivals is obviously unknown. He says:

"We will still have shortcomings in top speed but we will see that the Ferrari in three curves will be the most competitive car alongside the Lotus," he concluded.

That's fantastic news from Mark G.

The top speed discussion...I think the answer is Friday free practice and a race weekend. It's just pent up frustration that always builds between race weekends.

Wow, heck of a statement, and very encouraging if true. Also interesting that they regard the Lotus in that way.

So this article would imply that top speed is still the biggest issue (which is why China would be the worst track for them), and therefore still maybe traction and/or drag from the sidepods are problems, but that their aerodynamic downforce is very good, hence why they'll be good in the fast corners - is that a fair assessment?

I think he refers to 3 big updates in Spain, Canada and Valencia, no?

Hello Everybody.. Newbie here.. :-)

I'm sure he means three corners, and I would bet those are Renault, Campsa and New Holland (that is to say long right hander after the first S, 90º right hander before Nissan Straight and quick one before main straight).

Reason is those are the 3 fastest corners...
