Ferrari F2012

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Looking at the speed they leave the grid at, I'd say Ferrari have no problem with rear mechanical grip!
By full fuel level, the car looks to have a good balance. We can see that on the good starts and fast time lap in the beginnin.
But the less traction in the race, is evident by low fuel even the topspeed/Drs was better as Williams, Alonso can't overtake Maldonado. The Reason is that Maldonado with better traction comes faster from the last two corner as Fernando.
That Alonso make good Qualifying Lap by Low Fuel level, is because they use new tyres = more grip, and that can hide the less traction problem for some lap, but not in the final laps of a race when the tyres are many laps old. Is my argumentation

Apparently someone stated Ferrari had placed 7 laps of fuel for his "low fuel" Quali run...the car looks stable to me, the parts/upgrades seems to have given him a lot more confidence in his machine.
If someone said to me that you can have three wishes, my first would have been to get into racing, my second to be in Formula 1, my third to drive for Ferrari.

'Not sure braking or traction is a massive problem for the car. I'm more worried about how the front pull rod handles the bumps at Monaco.

I don't think that this could be more problematic then on any other circuit. Scarbs showed that movement ratio of front pull rod is similar to push rod, so no worries from my point of view. I would say roll bar stiffness set up will be more crucial on Monaco circuit.

Sector 3 in spain tells a completely different story.

I think, at this point, we can trust that what the team is publicly identifying as its problems are genuine. They were saying traction and drag were a problem, but now they seem entirely focused on downforce, so I would say that's a good indication that the traction problem has been solved. As was the quali lap, I might add.

Are the days of "Monaco spec" setups gone? Are we going to get ultra downforce wings? Obviously they still have ultra "skinny" wings for Monza, so you'd presume the reverse was also true.

And then there is another major step in Montreal. Since it has some pretty major straights, you might presume that if they are working on a DDRS, which I'm sure they are, this might be a time to bring it. Has there been any confirmation or otherwise that this is in the works?

precisely. In Quali, we were 1 tenth off Hamilton in Sector 3 and only a few hundreths off Maldonado.

+1 the pull rods have proved themselves time and again! i just hope that the debate will end in monaco....
But how can you be certain that the F2012 wouldn't have been even faster on water with a front push-rod?

And How can you be certain that Mclaren, Lotus, Williams or Redbull would't have been even more faster as they are now with a Pull-rod similar to Ferrari?

Get over it, not reasons to blame that suspension.

I think also that aero disturbance prevented Alonso to stay close enough on last corner which is a fast one and destroyed his tyres. Also the DRS section was not so long in Barcellona.

You know what, when this is a discussion board, I will reserve myself the right to an opinion even if it contradicts even the wisest and most xperienced of engineers on this fine forum.

Based on earlier arguments, I still believe that Ferrari went too far with this layout, but that it will be the way to go in 2014.

Re: Ferrari F2012

the front pull-rod suspension might be mechanically sound but it's unnecessary (Adrian Newey said so, only reason to do it is to do it differently) and aero realted it was clearly a mistake (unwanted, hard to evaluate vortices disturbing airflow),
that is what I read and it made sense to me.
I bet it will be gone 2013.

+1 I would wanna see peoples faces then!! and for the record...Andrian Newey is not always right...as is proved this year...so because he said that its unnecessary doesn't mean that it really is....
