I'm wondering how does Pirelli decide the tyre compounds for a race. I am sure it is decided based on the track temperature and grip, are there any other factors that need to be taken into account like suspension settings? In theory soft tyres are used when the track temperature and grip are not so good. Correct me if I am wrong.
Really don't believe it's anything that fancy. Just based on previous experience and testing. As an example, a street course like Monaco is always going to be using stuff on the softest / most tractive end of the scale. You find what range works and go from there... rather than some sort of elaborate (or ghetto) wear predictions and crap.
Grip is a four letter word. All opinions are my own and not those of current or previous employers.
