Ferrari F2012

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Re: Ferrari F2012

Just the fact that the join between the (red) sidepods and (black) exhaust housing has gone from a curved joint to a straight one shows that there has been change. From what we can see, I agree that the exhaust is now closer to the driver than before - you can see it in relation to the bodywork - the slot (for want of a better word) that channels the gases now appears wider and more open towards its outward edge, and there is an extra cooling vent on the outside of the acer duct (if we can still call them that).

I wonder if that additional cooling vent is there to try to prevent the exhaust gases from diffusing outwards too much? Someone who understands these things better may want to correct this, but my thought is that, since the slot on the exhaust now seems pointed further towards the rear tyres, the hot air from the cooling may be being used to help contain it within that path? That's just an uneducated speculation, however...

At 1st thanks to alogoc for giving the gallary link, now from the picture i posting it seems that Ferrari indeed changed the length of the "cows tongue extension" and thus it now looks prolonged, it may well make the effect of the exhaust more predictable and can be channeled to seal the diffuser in a better way.

2nd things is that F2012 certainly changed its floor hole caz u can now see the dfference or gap between the floor hole and to the edge of the floor.

3rd is the orientation of the floor hole and the trailing edge of the floor just ahead of the tyre it now seems ascending and thus may smoother the tire squirting effect to create more downforce.

4thly the Rad exit beside the exhaust is new and almost like the one version they tested in the mugello test.

Is that a new bit on the FW? or does it just look different against a different backdrop?

I think that they are indeed different version, caz look at the trailing edge of the FW, it looks shorter and more concave....

I think it looks virtually the same as the Canada spec but possibly moved backwards towards the driver a bit more. And the added vent/slot for cooling. Other than that it doesn't look that different to me. But won't know for sure until we see better pictures.

I don't think we'll see the new FW until tomorrow in FP1 or FP2. Most teams don't usually show their new updates straight away, unless they're big changes like the exhaust in Canada. I could be wrong but I just don't believe we'll see a new FW until the car is going around the track.

Well, that actually makes sense. More slots give you ability to run higher angle of attack as there is less chance of flow separation.

The front wing has been partitioned into five elements at the end plates (+ two cascade elements) since at least China, if not before.
