You don't have to make it back to the pits after the race, there is no rule for that. There's only a rule, in the technical rule book of all places rather than the sporting rule book, saying that the car must make it back after qualifying. So if you fail to make it back after qualifying your car is in breach of the technical rules and is therefore disqualified, but after the race there is no rule at all.
