Mercedes AMG F1 W03

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

As I understand it they have - they're just less visible. Updates have been more on making benign aerodynamics and suspension geometry, to ensure that they can work the tyres better and get them into the correct working range.

Yes, the pace is bad on high fuel.

thats likely due to no sufficient downforce to geenrate grip during high fuel runs

they promised it should be solved with a lower CoG and longer wheelbase in comparison to last year, nothing happened :|

The Lower CoG does nothing to help a lack of downforce.

they still need to take weight out of the car and put it into the air going over the car

The W03 as of late seems to be very strong in the last stint, and very weak in the first stint. It is also comparatively much stronger in qualifying. It does therefore seem to be strong on low fuel, and weak in high fuel.

This is interesting, as historically the W02 was very strong at the beginning of the race before falling back later on (e.g. China 2011, Monza 2011, etc.).

So, in a sense, Mercedes have at the least identified a flaw in the W02 which they attempted to correct. And to be fair, the car seems to be a decent qualifier.

It does seem that they while keeping a few other balls in the air they seem to have dropped others.
- Where is the high speed car that kept the McLaren at bay in Monza '11? The W03 was being continually mobbed on the straights of Valencia and Silverstone.
- Where have the amazing starts gone? The W03 seems to be average to below-average on its off-the-start traction. MSC was lucky to keep 3rd into the first corner.

yea with the ddrs i dont understand where the high speed on the straights has gone even with drs they are often one of the slower teams down the straight and they dont make up for it in the med/high speed corners

Wasn't the top speed good at Valencia?

you're wrong. in valencia, MSC did 320KPH with DRS open. in silverstone, the car's setup was done for the rainy situation. that's why it was slow there.

I do think, some of us are being far too harsh.

The W03 has not gone backwards, it's gone forwards compared to last year. I believe the W03 is a quick car, but, several compromises are having to stall the car. Which is why the beastly qualifying from earlier in the season, is no longer apparent.

Nevertheless, the W03 was the quickest car in China and Monaco. When did us fans ever experience that with the W01/W02?

We didn't. The fact of the matter is: progress is progress. With the W04, Costa and Willis will be there from the start of its development, we shall see what they can muster up.

Time and patience, this project will prevail. I'm sure MS knows that.

Already in month 7 so this is the time to switch your recources over to next years contender after laying the groundwork in april ...I don´t see them putting too much effort in W03 They will need the next iteration now they start to understand current regs.

I concur, surely the three, or perhaps even four, kings are bitching over the general concept for the W04 as we speak.

Given there will be one that is.
