Mercedes AMG F1 W03

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

It probably has more to do with them lacking rear df than not really needing the cascade. If they had more rear df I have no doubt they'd run the cascade again.

mind you ,cascades were first seen on Bigois Prost if I´m correct .And it took a long time till all teams had finally adopted to this concept.
So the question really is if it is such a clear cut decision to have them .

Regulations this year reward having more rear downforce. This year's front wings have too much downforce believe it or not, they are actually unbalancing he car. Mecedez could afford to lose downforce on the front to gain better air conditioning for the middle and rear of the car.

... or gain some downforce on the rear with revised exhaust/suspension or better airflow with tighter packaging etc.

removing cascades on FW gives me a signal this team has serious problems which results in drivers points ...

I agree with @n smikle that their FW used in first couple of races was more agressive and the fact they removed cascades can point out that they are trying to move the balance more rearwards and at the same time gain more clean air flow from FW towards the splitter. Last years FW designs cope to balance the cars with lot more downforce on the rear.

So what you appear to be saying is that the designers from all the teams, are wrong? I hope that you ave your CV ready.

The W03 has not gone backwards, it's gone forwards compared to last year. I believe the W03 is a quick car, but, several compromises are having to stall the car. Which is why the beastly qualifying from earlier in the season, is no longer apparent.

Nevertheless, the W03 was the quickest car in China and Monaco. When did us fans ever experience that with the W01/W02?

We didn't. The fact of the matter is: progress is progress. With the W04, Costa and Willis will be there from the start of its development, we shall see what they can muster up.

Time and patience, this project will prevail. I'm sure MS knows that.
i doubt even he thought it'd take 4 years.
what annoys me is that is clear that mercedes are sticking to that resource agreement that was conjured up... because (ironically) they are a car company who dont want to spend a bomb on racing, and want some payback for it.
(ironic because in the past it was usually the car giants who had all the money to spend).

i have read (though I dont know if its true) that both redbull and ferrari really don't give a damn about the resource agreement. So if its the case that merc are spending significantly less....well, they are going to yield worse results.
In which case....theres no hope - its always going to be like this.

i think next to the manufacturers points table, they should show the financials of each team - how much they've spent, year to date, every race. now that would REALLY be fascinating wouldn't it.
If F1 really considered itself a sport - it'd open up the books and make all this info transparent to everyone - the fact is money is the number 1 biggest aspect of the sport, and arguably the biggest factor in performance on the track - so surely it makes sense to reveal the financials?

Looks like it. Let's hope they've unlocked some tyre potential or they've upgraded things that are not visible...

Were there supposed to be any updates planned for Hockenheim on the W03...?

Affirmative.
"The Hockenheim layout should be more suited to the F1 W03 than the high-speed Silverstone layout," Brawn added.
"We are bringing some further improvements to the car which should help our performance."
