Adrian Newey seems to have taken a bit of departure from his high downforce philosophy, assuming that wasn't the maximum downforce the reds bulls had on.
It only makes sense: they no longer have the speed at the corners to make up lost ground on the straights. Not to mention their inability to overtake in a straight line.
That may be the strategy for the race, having that extra top speed. However, with the result from qualifying, it may be damage limitation control at this point, having to handle the mid-pack through at least the first portion of racing.

F1 cars these days don't even get up to 330kph, do they. I've not seen that speed for several years.
Of course they do. They do just barely short of 350 @ Monza.

During V10 era they reached 370kph at Monza.
I seen just seen 336 for Alonso in 2011 on youtube but nothing close to 350.

I think maybe I've been spending too much time watching the Red Bull pole laps which probably biases what I see somewhat.

Edit - 349, I'm genuinely surprised, I've never seen that on any on boards for many years.

Vettel and Hamilton wasted a huge chance today. And when's the last time Button scored a pole ? 2009 ?

I was thinking the same thing. Alonso in grid position # 6 and only Kimi of the other 4 guys in the in the group at the top ahead of him. :wtf:

I can't think of any other reasons to set your car up slower in qualifying than for the race unless it is a tyre preservation issue. Maybe Red Bull were gambling that the guys in front of them would burn out their tyres quicker by sliding more in the corner because they have less downforce. But Button looked like he was on rails on his pole lap, even in the high downforce sector, so I don't think that gamble is going to pay of, especially when he will be helped by the added fuel pushing the car into the track.

I think you are right, damage limitation now.

Perhaps the best bit to come out of Qualifying today is that Alonso, Webber, and Vettel are not in the top spots on the grid. After the race tomorrow even though Alonso will still be in the lead by a decent margin, the gaps will the narrowed at the top! (hopefully) :D

I didn't see quali, but it seems that it was quite exciting. I didn't expected Kobayashi on 2nd - good performance for him and I hope he will make the meximum he can in the race. I was expecting a better performance from Grosjean and Senna, but at least Senna's quali looks poor.
Massa - what the f**k!?
Good place to start for Kimi. I still hope for a double Lotus podium, but I am now more reserved about thinking that that can happen.
Holding my breath at the start with Maldonado and Kamui so close together.

Kimi has always and still is extremely strong at SPA (as you can see from the gap to his teammate) he really have a good chance to win his first race of the season.

Kimi look set to benefit most from this race.

Button looked fantastic today. What a great turn around!

There must be something in this update that is allowing Button to crack on, any ideas?

Sauber to pass MGP in the points standings tomorrow???? :wtf: :wtf: :wtf:

I would LOVE that .Not even half the workforce ,a customer engine ,customer gearbox,no big heads in the organisation ...
Brawn should let that sink into him-true minnows challenging for wins... Sauber has turned a remarkable corner ..a win would top the TR Monza win of Vettel in 2008.

Why tomorrow? They should've been ahead a long time ago.

Actually if Kimi is the only one of the top guys to finnish ahead of Alonso, Alonso lead in the WDC may well increase. (not to take anything away from Kimi) .
