Mercedes AMG F1 W03

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Looks like cascades are back, but the r shape thing is gone. In addition there are also some changes on front wing as well

Gulp! Reminds me a bit of the initial bgp001 fw..

My guess is that it is for data evaluation purposes only and is not actually a consideration. Since it seems to represent a step back in development for many features that became new over the year, e.g. top flap connecting into bottom flap, humps just next to the nosecone column, etc.

Edit: also, if my eyes do not deceive me, there appears to be an update on their usual cascade-less FW. The endplate seems to sport an additional small turning vane, perhaps 1/4 of the height of the endplate.

How so?
Their imbalance has put them in the dilemma of either adding rear downforce (which will cost them a lot of drag, as their rear wing is rather inefficient) or losing front downforce (which lowers overall downforce, gives them more top speed but ruins the cornering).
Apparently going for top speed is faster (or Mercedes thinks it's faster), but that's really just a question of setup not of the design of the car.
What they really need is a more efficient rear wing, and in my opinion that is the aim of their blown rear wing (or maybe not).
You can only make the rear wing, defined by current rules, that more efficient. It really isn't going to bring much more downforce for the same drag and certainly isn't going to solve their problems. They need a complete new back end in which the diffuser can create more downforce.

The upper of the two front wings picuted above features the early season main plain with Monaco updated 3rd element. The inner cascade is missing and the inboard cascade is only a single cascade as opposed to it previously sporting a small 1/4 length cascade built into the side.

The early wing appears to flow more under the main element to the barge boards thus aiding flow to the rear whilst the later main element features more overall downforce which is probably why it's running minus the outer cascades.

or the cascaded front wing would be used in combination with the lotus style DDRS?

You can see the additional end plate vane - I think that's new.
