Because the suspension is broken... you did see the accident this car was in right?
God damn im retarded!!! :D I just opened the thread looking for pictures of today. Just assumed they were from today without checking the date :) Thought it was the MP4-27 getting driven to Monza :D

Feel a bit dumb right now :)

has anyone thought that the sidepod wings cause lift? Only a small amount. The low pressure above it scavanging air from above and pulling it down.

Or maybe at high speed they close up slightly. (think blowing between two sheets of paper) this would speed up the airflow even faster between the sidepod and the fin (generating an increased exaust effect at the diffuser) along with the floor flexing lower to the ground at the leading edge. Would allow them to run lower DF levels at the wings helping top speed yet reatining highspeed DF. judging by buttons sector times over the weekend it points to him having just as much DF in the 2nd sector as hamilton yet vastly improved top speed

I think the amount of downwash is more interesting.

^^^ Definitely not a DDRS system before anybody starts getting excited seeing it for the 1st time :D

I still have no idea why they haven't covered up the enormous rivet/bolt holes in the endplate. McLaren usually get all crazy when anything has anything other than a perfect fit so the huge holes are a bit confusing!

Does anybody know yet if they were thinking of bringing/have brought a low-DF specific FW to Monza? They didn't in Spa and haven't bothered in years past but, as a lot of the other teams have one, they might have looked into the idea to compliment the low-DF RW they introduced to the car last week.

Honest question: what is going on in the endplate?

They have some stickers to put on later, it's been adjusted since spa. Also they did bring a low DF wing to Spa but even Button didn't run it. Most likely will be used this weekend though.

The stuff in the silver tape is sensor wires used fairly frequently on fridays these days and the weird channel embedded in the endplate is the access panel for the DRS hydraulics.

As for the holes, like I said earlier, no idea! Looking back at the pics from Spa it seems that they do leave them exposed rather than fitting a vanity sticker or something. Strange.

Been away for a little while, when did MaCa add the VG's by the mirrors like Ferrari?

Side pods cause huge lift. It is unavoidable with the shape of the side-pod. so what Mclaren has done to reduce that lift is a big step for them. Sauber were really the first though (this year at least).

I can't imagine that counteracting said lift would help their downwash though. If anything I think such a drag-reduction arrangement would reduce some of the downwash effect. Perhaps that is in line with how their exhausts are lower closer to the diffuser edges since their Hockenheim update?

Much appreciated. I know I've freaked out about seeing those kind of panels before and I keep on forgetting if I had found out what they were for or not!

It increases the down-wash by guiding the air to the contours of the side-pod.
There is a low pressure zone right after the top leading edge of a side-pod as the air tries to stay attached to it. Almost like a pinch point, as the air climbs over the edge, because of the air speed it want to go straight and not downwards with the side-pod. The vane helps to alleviate this.

They added them after Hungary.
