Understeer?

The only time I get understeer (in the caterham) is when I am:
a) on full fuel
b) running a stupid set up
c) have traction control on
d) am in dirty air

The rest of the time it feels good, it's not as good as 2010 or pCARS but it's a definite improvement on 2011.

I've raced Rfactor, Iracing, GT5, and f120xx all on the same driving force GT wheel. I never felt rfactor or Iracing to be significantly harder or more realistic. I've also heard an F1 driver say that F1 cars in real life are easier to drive than in Iracing. So...how can people say this game has "bad" physics. I think it feels much more natural than the F1 cars in GT5.

They say it has "bad" physics because for some screwed up reason people think F1 cars are utterly impossible to drive except by the Chosen Few. They base their opinion on what they think an F1 car should handle like and the idea that every game on a console is "dumbed down". "Well it's just a 360 game, so it has to be inaccurate!" No, it doesn't. Just comparing my real life Kia Forte Koup to the version in Forza 4 tells me it's pretty damn spot on. It even manages to get the weight of the steering wheel right.

I always go back to Jackie Stewart when Papyrus plopped him down in front of Grand Prix Legends. His line was that it was FAR more difficult to drive than the cars actually were. Yet that's still considered the pinnacle of racing physics in a game.

Long story short, too many people with too much time on their hands and not enough time behind the wheels of actual cars.

Exactly the same, I use a G27, and have play rFactor, GT5 and all 3 F120xx games.
The F1 games are = to rFactor. The F1 cars in GT5 are awful, Although I did enjoy beating Vettel for gold in all his challenges :D .

rFactor is great because I play with the 1976, 1985 & 1991 patches. But for current day F1 , I play the current F1 games.

Physics are fine in all 3 games in my opinion. The 1 thing I didnt like in F12010 was to catch oversteer , the best way was to slam on the brakes with some opposite lock! (didnt like that 1 bit)

Oddly, I found I could catch oversteer just fine in 2010, with only a slight lift and counter steer; in 2011, I find nothing catches it. Not tried 2012 yet, though the reports that it's much more understeery and has less high speed oversteer suggest I'll like it.

Well after more time fine tuning the force feedback settings, car set up, and my own driving style i've managed to pretty much control the understeer (or at least make it predictable enough to avoid). The only times I am getting it now is when I'm abit too hot into some corners. As for the oversteer I would say that for me it feels like a compromise between the relatively easy to catch 2010, and the brutal-brakes-on-full-lock 2011. sometimes i spin, sometimes I actually catch it quite well, and sometimes I have to cheat and slam the brakes on. But yes in regards to oversteer I think they have hit a manageable sweet spot. And as for the points that pierce, thearmofbarlow, and nathanolder made I enjoyed reading them and wish i could comment further, but havn't played the games such as iracing and rfactor due to a not very good PC and budget lol. But I think you all have hit the nail on the head. Alot of people dislike these games because they don't meet their expectations; these expectations being 'this game is going to fully recreate an f1 experience down to the last decimal place' Codemasters have always maintained that it was meant to be a compromise, and probably leaning towards arcade and easily accessible for newcomers to the games and the sport.

I've personally found that really - I'm just entering corners too quick. I'm too used to the heavier downforce levels of 2011, and I'm not getting a good balance in the cornering in 2012 because my mind is used to entering the corners with the speeds I did in F1 2011. After several hours of setup work and practice pounding out laps, I'm happy to say I've found a good balance I'm happy with again - though I'm still not 100% confident in entering medium to high speed corners with the lesser downforce, but it's something that I can build up in time, as I'm happy with the overall balance already - so it really was, in my case, anyways - more of an "old habits die hard" issue rather than any specific handling issue.

Mind you while I have stonking qualifying pace my race pace is pretty rubbish - I did a 1:26.386 in Senna's Williams to take pole in Melbourne (Legend AI) which was some 6 tenths up on Alonso's P2 time, but not only was I slower than Alonso by the order of something like 1-1.5s in the race, but my tyres were also wearing out quicker. But I think that's more setup work than anything.

However, given that I used to really make use of the FP sessions in order to actually do setup work and gather data on how long I could run stints for (in order to work out the best stop strategy for me  ) I'll miss FP1 and FP2.

I did find something which was really idiotic though. Codies announced with 2011 that they wouldn't allow tyre changes with red flags because they felt that a Monaco 2011 type situation where the guy in front hasn't pitted (Vettel) getting a free tyre change was not right. So I was racing in Monaco in the wet. It was raining VERY heavily, and a pileup happened at Loews which caused a blockage (which I saw on my mini track map). The race was red flagged. Everyone was on wets but I was on inters (it was the others' outlap, I was planning to take on wets on that lap). The race restarted and the track was dry, but my tyres were still inters... and the others were still on wets. Needless to say it was carnage. I braked for T1, and my tyre temps (which I saw in the mini menu) went through the roof. I locked my rears, but managed to catch it enough so that I only brushed the wall slightly at St. Devote, with no obvious damage. I looked in my rearview, and Hamilton in P2 had spun, as had Alonso in P3, blocking the road. Nobody could keep the wets/inters in check. Heck I exited and I had wheelspin like nobody's business. I hit a bump on the way up to Casino and I just spun and smacked the wall. Horrible horrible implementation of the red flag.
