richard_leeds wrote:As for asphalt, when it is first laid it has a smooth surface formed by the rollers. As the traffic runs over the new surface it wears away the soft binder (bitumen) and filler (fine aggregates). The result is that the hard coarse aggregate (ie stones) are left standing proud. That's the optimum texture for tyre friction.
Then as further traffic passes over the surface it wears down the aggregate, and the sharp arises (corners) of the aggregate are worn to rounded edges. Hence the overall "friction" goes down.
Depending on traffic and climatic conditions, the optimum roughness is roughly 1 year, then the roughness trails off over 10- 20 years.
That is a good summary of the general mechanism. It complements nicely the source that Ciro contributed. I would assume that racing tracks get much less wear than busy public roads or highways and their wear should generally occur over longer periods of time. I was reporting on the tyre grip issues because it was mentioned by former F1 driver Marc Surer who talks to the drivers quite a lot and has very good technical understanding. I was a bit shocked to be honest that some make it a personal issue to prove Surer wrong. It is not such an important issue that we bicker over it. So I will not continue the discussion.

Latest odds on pole:
Lewis Hamilton 2.25
Sebastian Vettel 3.75
Fernando Alonso 15

I'm not so sure that Alonso is so far behind. It is nice to see Red Bull in good shape for the race. I think they have done a lot of work on the race set up in FP 1/2.

EDIT: Interesting to see Hamilton Faster than Button in sectors 2 and 3 but slower in sector 1.Could it be different setups again?
Button is a Suzuka Specialist. He is mega through the S's.
unfortunately , with a 5 place grid penalty , it looks as though he will have to set the car up for top speed rather than optimum lap time , if he can't overtake he will have no chance of a decent finish

Yeah, I was one of them

If RB has an edge on Mclaren now the championship starts looking mighty doable for Vettel

ferrari looks twitchy.
With hardly many races left no point sandbagging they need to get out their and get on with it now.

In Q and race, not FP.

maybe not sandbagging but not pushing too hard....
adding vertical load is helping with graining tyres on fresh or too smooth surfaces ,at least according to my personal experience.Graining occured with the softest compounds and seemed pretty much uncurable -until you added vertical load.
(in my case increasing weight transfer)

It´s only Practice. Why risk binning the car like Schumacher and Di Resta when you can work on your race setup and general balance of the car?

I think it will be similar to Singapore. RBR looked super strong all weekend then BAM, Hamilton untouchable.

I see Vettel taking pole and win ; Alonso's luck can only get him so far ... and in the end Vettel will win the championship.

Let's just focus on this race. It's still too soon to conclude who'll win the championship. All 3 of them still have a chance to win.

I think this time Red Bull are genuinely fast. Vettel did his best time on meds, and Webber looks strong too.

That is a sensible proposal. As we have seen in 2010 much can happen in six races. I hope Hamilton and Vettel will catch up and give us a three way battle to the wire.

No Raikkonen. THe car looks pretty handy on this tyre eater of a track. I won't be surprised if Lotus ran the soft tyres as much as possible or do a one stop hard to soft.

The lotus remains balanced despite the tire wear, that's what makes it fast in the race. It's not that it has more downforce or better mechanical setup, they're still Lotus. So although their tires wear like everyone else's the balance of the car remains consistent throughout the tire stint, whereas others are dealing with understeering or oversteering cars due to one axle wearing the tires faster which further accelerates tire wear. We saw in China when Raikkonenen went from 6th to 14th after one little mistake that they too must deal with tire wear.
