Bulge behind Renault bargeboard?

Post

Image

I keep on looking at this picture and I see that bulge underneath the Elf logo... Does anybody know what it is..?
Simon: Nils? You can close in now. Nils?
John McClane: [on the guard's phone] Attention! Attention! Nils is dead! I repeat, Nils is dead, ----head. So's his pal, and those four guys from the East German All-Stars, your boys at the bank? They're gonna be a little late.
Simon: [on the phone] John... in the back of the truck you're driving, there's $13 billon dollars worth in gold bullion. I wonder would a deal be out of the question?
John McClane: [on the phone] Yeah, I got a deal for you. Come out from that rock you're hiding under, and I'll drive this truck up your ass.

Strengthener for crash tests would be my bet, although after Monza airflow might be a better guess

The item is not new and I don't think it has anything to do with the aerodynamics. The removal of it would actually be quite beneficial to the aero efficiency as I cannot see how this may help the airflow towards the sidepods.

It's been on the Renault as far as I know since the beginning of the season and I am convinced it's because of the size of the monocoque.

I would say its for packaging, or strength.

Anyone have x-ray glasses?

I believe it is there to allow the padding and dimensions as required by regulation 14.6.7. Also check the drawings bottom of the document.

Maybe that's where the team keep Alonso's sour grapes.

The bulge wa snot on the launch car and appeared subsequently for the first testing, I suspect its not structural, just a bulge added over the monocoque. I also suspect its not for the dimensional rules as when viewed from above its sticks clear of the shap eof the car.
Thus I can only presume its for aero purposes as the shape tends to follow that of the bargeboard.
