COTA Austin - construction and infrastructure

Post here all non technical related topics about Formula One. This includes race results, discussions, testing analysis etc. TV coverage and other personal questions should be in Off topic chat.

What do you think of the prospect of a USGP 2012 at Austin Texas

Good thinking. Place has good infra structure and nice climate in winter.

Not good as it has no motor sport tradition in the US.

Which GS?

Actually, I haven't seen a map yet which shows section numbers.

Here's the trophy - not bad (at least it's not another Santander logo)...

Nice looking trophy, esp compared to some of the others I've seen.

BTW, we heard a while back that the Turn 1 GS is being reconfigured & they've removed some sections due to low sales there. Now some fans in that GS are telling us that their tickets have been relocated to other sections there. Haven't seen any construction work on it in 3 or 4 weeks. They should still be able to get it done, but they seem to be waiting until the last minute on that one while every other GS looks done. Here's a shot of the T1 GS that Vance took yesterday. Still looking for a room?

Rooms available, prices on the decline.

COTA room block contracts have been expiring, so rooms have been slowly released back to the market. There are now 221 hotels with availability for Friday through Monday, starting at $156 in San Marcos and $234 in Austin.

Anyone want to speculate on what car this circuit will suit based on the type of corners available? Based on what I've seen this year, I'd have to say sector one belongs to Red Bull, and sector three belongs to Mclaren, with sector two being a toss up between who's feeling saucy. Also given the nature of the track I wouldn't be surprised to see someone lose it during the race ala Perez in Suzuka.

Going to the race? Get an early start.

Some of you may have heard about or even attended the RunTex fun run this morning at COTA. Seems like it was a good time once the estimated 3000 people got there. At 8am (the scheduled start time) FM812 was backed up about 1.5 miles from the COTA gate, past SH130. The fastest road in America ground to a halt as it was backed up about 1.5 miles back from the southbound exit to FM 812. Many people reported travel times of more than 1 hour from SH71 to FM812. Some traffic control at the 130 exit to FM 812 would have been a good idea. There was none. The only traffic control was at the front gate of the circuit. The Main GS lot only filled to about 75% capacity, yet the delays had people still arriving over an hour after the run was scheduled to start. I found a couple of tweeted traffic photos. Event photos to follow.

The race thread is here  viewtopic.php?f=13&t=13890

I'll leave this open for comments about construction and infrastructure. I'll change the title too for the avoidance of doubt.

Looks pretty good, but I guess with all newly constructed circuits, it will take a year to settle down and get "seasoned". I would expect the circuit to be dusty, unless they wash it down as they did with Indian GP this year...

Cant wait for the race!

But the advantage that this circuit has is that it will get plenty of use, unlike Korea and others that have zero activity outside of F1.
