Penalties carried over, didn't this happen to someone recently, maybe Michael Schumacher? I could be wrong.

He can't take another 10 place grid drop if he is already at the back of the grid

Schumi got 10 place penalty when he hit Toro Rosso at SIgnapore to be applied at next race, naturally.

Will interesting to see if RB will change the gear ratios and a new engine and start from pitlane and have a fresh engine next race. Unless they get the 10 place penalty for new engine.

I thought gear ratios had to be nominated before first practice and can't be changed throughout the race weekend, can anyone confirm this ?

I am not sure but if they change the gearbox it will be safe to assume they can change the ratios.

I'm pretty sure they will not do anything to the engine, just change to a lower downforce setup to make it easier to pass on the straights for him.

Correct, but they might be able to make changes and take a penalty for it, which isn't going to make a difference anyway. Basicilly they can do everything they want with the car now, short of fitting illegal parts.

oh no, dont think they can. Forgot. They must give the gear ratios to the FIA at end of FFP sessions. So, if he got short ratios he got to stay with them.

Basicilly they can as long as the penalty isn't exclusion from the race itself.

They can change the gearbox but they are not allowed to change gear ratios.

What if they do? Can they get a penalty? So what they are last. wont make any difference unless FIA will strictly prohibit the gear ratios change.

Red Bull's decision to start from the pitlane means it will be able to make some changes to Vettel's car's set-up ahead of the race.

To be honest I don't know why some people are saying it to be Alonso's title now. This has blown the doors wide open now and Alonso can certainly regain an equal footing - but I still think either of the two can win it.

Will be interesting to see if the FIA have truly fixed the DRS zones - last year all we had was A passing B in Zone 1, and B passing A in Zone 2.

Whose saying that? Alonso is a massive underdog, there is no gurantee he will even make it past the 1st corner tommorrow, alot can happen, possibly even more twists in the tail.

Rules regarding gearbox change:

28.6 For the purposes of this Article only, an Event will be deemed to comprise P3, the qualifying practice session and the race.
a) Each driver may use no more than one gearbox for five consecutive Events in which his team competes. Should a driver use a replacement gearbox he will drop five places on the starting grid at that Event and an additional five places each time a further gearbox is used.
Any replacement gearbox must be fitted with the same gear ratios that were declared under d) below and will only be required to complete the remainder of the Event in question. Any change to the gear ratios declared under d) below will incur a further five grid place penalty. In either case a new five race sequence may start at the following Event.
Unless the driver fails to finish the race (or is unable to start the race for reasons other than a penalty imposed by the stewards) the gearbox fitted to the car at the end of the Event must remain in it for the remainder of the five race sequence. Any driver who failed to finish the race at the first, second, third or fourth of the five Events for reasons which the technical delegate accepts as being beyond the control of the team or driver, may start the following Event with a different gearbox without a penalty being incurred.
A gearbox will be deemed to have been used once the car’s timing transponder has shown that it has left the pit lane.
b) If a driver is replaced after the first, second, third or fourth Event of a five Event period, having finished the first, second, third or fourth Events, the replacement driver must use the gearbox which the original driver had been using.
c) After consultation with the relevant team the FIA will attach seals to each gearbox in order to ensure that no moving parts, other than those specifically permitted under d) below, can be rebuilt or replaced.
d) At each Event seals may be broken once, under supervision and at any time prior to the second day of practice, for the sole purpose of changing gear ratios and dog rings (excluding final drives or reduction gears). Competitors must inform the FIA technical delegate which ratios they intend to fit no later than two hours after the end of P2. However, one additional change of ratios and dog rings will be permitted if a gearbox change is necessary on the first day of practice before the end of P2.
Gear ratios and dog rings (excluding final drives or reduction gears) may also be changed under supervision for others of identical specification at any time during an Event provided the FIA technical delegate is satisfied there is evident physical damage to the parts in question and that such changes are not being carried out on a systematic basis.
e) Other than under d) above, a replacement gearbox will also be deemed to have been used if any of the FIA seals are damaged or removed from the original gearbox after it has been used for the first time.

So basicaly they can do whatever they want with the gearbox, since he starts last anyway
