Swearing in F1

Post

Just read this, had no idea they did this :)
“Although the teams have no control over the selection of these snippets, they do have one weapon at their disposal: when passing information they are keen to conceal from others, they ensure that an obscenity forms a prominent part of the conversation.”

Now that is an effective way to be sure that the information isn't broadcasted :)
"...and there, very much in flames, is Jacques Laffite's Ligier. That's obviously a turbo blaze, and of course, Laffite will be able to see that conflagration in his mirrors... he is coolly parking the car somewhere safe." Murray Walker, San Marino 1985

Been around for a while really. AFAIK bleating out swearwords takes too much time, so the FIA doesn't bother already - they just let any swearword-filled radio message go

The juicy ones will end up in the official race edits though

Yeah. But never on broadcast though.

I assume they are all distributed off air to all the broadcasters. Some are a little less uptight about colourful metaphors. The BBC schoolteacher attitude annoys the living --- out of me.

Ah, I followed that up. Richard Williams, who wrote the original piece is a vanilla sports writer. I expect my års knows more about snipe shooting than he knows about F1.
Richard Williams is chief sports writer for the Guardian. His previous jobs include chief sports writer of the Independent, assistant editor of the Times, editor of Time Out and Melody Maker and head of artists and repertoire at Island Records

As raymondu says, this has been around for a while.

Also FOM control the content released to the media, so no need to slag off a particular broadcaster or journalist.

Team radio, engine sounds, and the TV feed shown on TV are all controlled by FOM. Broadcasters just add their commentary.

You misunderstand me.
The full radio feed is available to the commentary teams. They often report what they've heard even though it's never added to the FOM feed. Even then, some broadcasters (without the silly english taboo) will add it to their national feed.

It's not full. Commentators hear more than what is broadcasted on the TV (with the "Team radio" emblem on screen) but they still don't hear EVERYTHING.

I look forward to you documenting that.
Taking your advice, I shall not argue further.

Think about it. The commentators CAN'T be hearing all the team radios. How could they possibly listen to 24 conversations, watch the race AND commentate on it simultaneously?

The point was that if they wanted to they could listen in to the pit radio, not that they constantly are.

No, not all the team radio goes to the commentators. They hear more than what the tv audience hears, but less than the 100%. It's a fixed feed, not a feed that they can choose to eavesdrop on certain teams on demand.
