Mercedes AMG F1 W03

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Are they allowed to run sensor arrays during practice sessions?

They are allowed to run more sensors on a Friday, the car was photo'd with the sidepods off and bundles or clear plastic tubes were shown, clearly they are going to be doing some comparative runs for aero data...

The rear wing endplate actuator was another area that Mercedes went at alone against pit-lane concensus. What could be the reason for changing now?

I asume weight (CofG)...

Simplicity, their original hydraulic\cable operated system was straight forward until Schumacher's Canadian failure, the gearbox mounted actuator had to be revised to positively close the flap. Having a simple rear wing mounted actuator will have less parts, less to go wrong and less weight, albeit the small amount of remaining weight will be carried higher.

Actually, the embarrasing fact is that the car seems to be much faster with the old exhaust than the new one, look at the enormous gap between Michael and Nico, Its funny and sad at the same time.

two failures in important situations this year..but why change so late in the season, lack of development capacity?

Mercedes has turned around on their caliper position again from horizontal low to conventional quasi vertical mount -something they did already after 2009 ...
