After his depressing end in Australia last year (managing to drag an uncompetitive Skoda to a record second o/a before retiring over a stupid problem when his merchanics ran out of time replacing a clutch) I knew he would be back, and with a point to prove. Saddly he retited from the McRae stages rally here in Scotland a few weeks back. His MkII Escort broke down before the start, and the MkI replacement he managed to hire just days prior to the event broke down 6miles into Stage 1.
Last year we had one of the greatest scenes in rallying ever, when the whole service area stood still watching the clock to see if McRae would make it out in time, and the cheers he rescieved when the clock ran out. You know you are the greatest when the whole of a sporting world respects you that much.
