That is always useful to do. But it sounds to me as if Benson was tapping a very good source very close to the rule making action. For instance he was able to quantify the fuel saving targets versus current data.
Andrew Benson wrote:Currently, cars use about 150kg of fuel (about 195 litres) in a Grand Prix; in 2014, they will be allowed to consume no more than 100kg (130l).
So on average the cars will be carrying 25 kg less weight in form of fuel around. That is a useful improvement.
The changes he reports are very specific and I just want to list them here for comment:
1. High noses will come down from 550 mm to 185 mm. That is a massive change for the safety and for the aerodynamics.
2. Beam wings will be banned. Loss of downforce.
3. Front wings will be narrower by 75 mm each side. Substantial aero impact.
4. Restrictions on front wing end plates
5. Banning of Coanda effect exhaust locations
6. Fuel tanks will be 65L smaller
This will certainly be a very substantial package of rule changes particularly if you consider that the engines will become shorter, the turbo with MGU-H has to fit above the gear box and that the intercoolers have to be placed somewhere.
I think it will be a major shake up particularly for teams that are not very well resourced and do not have the latest and greatest in simulation.
On the engine side we obviously can only speculate who will be ahead in the power and efficiency game. On the chassis side I would be willing to put some money on Adrian Newey coming up with the neatest package. This is something he is incredibly good at.
