If someone said to me that you can have three wishes, my first would have been to get into racing, my second to be in Formula 1, my third to drive for Ferrari.

I guess he considered himself finnish by family connection at the time.
He has Finnish and German nationality, so he could switch between them earlier in his carreer. In Formula One, as for all FIA world championships, a driver's nationality is defined by his passport so he must have the German one as the first.
