A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Not That long ago Ferrari-Rory Byrne dropped the blown difusser idea and introduced the periscope exhaust on the F2000 methinks due to downforce fluctuations with closed throttle.

Back then the loss in downforce was lamented butit offered some scope for more (peak?)engine power as the exhaust could be significantly shorter.....
10 years on Newey was INVENTING blown difussers...
Even if this post os 10 years old, i have to correct it, as it is fill of mistakes. Indeed it is one big mistake.

The periscope exhaust was introduced on the F300 in 1998 by Rory. It was not due to downforce fluctuations, but because with Ferraris special layout, the "blown diffusor"-exhaust cooked the suspension.

Neither Rory Byrne not Adrian Newey DID INVENT blown diffusors! Blown Diffusors were invented by Jean Claude Migeot in 1983 on the Renault and widely used for many years by many teams. In 1995 teams started to drop blown diffusors because of fluctuations with closed throttle. In 1999 only McLaren used Blown diffusors, but also McLaren dropped blown diffusors in 2001.
